Why Are My Files at Risk?
Most of us are pretty lackadaisical technology users – it’s there for our convenience and entertainment, and we really don’t worry about what happens if something suddenly happens to it.
Until it does.
Even in today’s age of connectivity, unless you’re using an online backup service, once your device is damaged or lost, your files are irretrievable. This includes contacts, apps, photos, documents, everything.
If you’re not backing up your devices, you’re taking a huge risk. Think of how much is stored on your phone, and then think of how many phones you’ve had to replace – scary, right?
How Does Online Backup Work?
Online backup is more than just a USB drive in your desk drawer – it’s an active program that is constantly backing up your devices as new files are added and modified.
When you sign up for an online backup service, you get access to apps and programs for your devices. From there, that software usually starts automatically backing up your devices with what’s called continuous backup.
If you prefer, there are settings that allow you to schedule regular backups instead, and even throttle bandwidth so it doesn’t interfere with your other activities.
Not all online backup services will work on every device though, so before you sign up for a plan make sure they have all of the bells and whistles:
- mobile syncing
- complete mobile backup, including apps, contact, photos, and videos
- compatibility with your device
- mobile account management
Top 3 Online Backup Services
There are a lot of features that go into online backup, but I’ve made it easy for you to choose the perfect one with this quick list here of the top contenders on the web.
#1 Choice: iDrive – 9/10 – Back up everything on any device
One of the only online backup services that will actually back up everything on every device you own actually does it at the best price out there – just $46 a year for complete online backup for iDrive.
iDrive’s online backup is one of the few that backs up your mobile devices’ photos, videos, apps, and contacts. What’s really great is that you can back up as many devices as you want, with up to 1 TB of storage space.
You also get some of the most secure online backup available with iDrive – it’s completely geo redundant, devoid of third party involvement, encrypted, and comes with a remote wipe feature in case your device is ever stolen.
iDrive also allows you to sync your backed up files with all of your devices, and share them with a secure private link. Everything is accessible and private, all at the same time.
iDrive works on every device, and comes at one of the best prices you’re going to find.
To get secure back up on all of your devices, get iDrive today.
#2: CrashPlan – 8/10 – Unlimited storage space, but no mobile backup
CrashPlan is another good online backup service. At $60 a year, they’re a bit pricier, but the big draw here is that you get unlimited storage space with CrashPlan.
Though their storage isn’t geo-redundant like iDrive’s, they do use the same military grade encryption to secure your files in their privately owned data centers, and remote wipe is always included.
Their software isn’t quite as user-friendly as iDrive’s though, and their backup is limited solely to computers and external hard drives. Though CrashPlan has apps for mobile devices, they’re purely for account access.
CrashPlan can found at this website.
#3: Acronis– 5/10 – Expensive and invasive
I’m not a big fan of Acronis – their online backup service is seriously overpriced compared to a lot of their competition. If you have to back up more than one PC, be prepared to shell out $75 a year. Yea, $30 more a year for a service that actually does less.
Their basic plan only includes PC backup, so even if you just have a Mac, you can’t back it up with the cheaper plan. Plus, even their 24/7 support is only available to premium customers. You’ll get much more service, for far less money with iDrive.
As if this wasn’t bad enough, Acronis’s privacy policy is incredibly sketchy, citing the rights to share some of your data with third parties, and even denying responsibility for your file security.
The only real draw here is that they offer unlimited storage space, but even their mobile backup isn’t as good as iDrive’s. You can only back up photos and videos with Acronis, and there is no file sharing.
Acronis is here.
