CyberGhost vs PureVPN - Comparing Performance, Speed, Prices
Staying protected online has never been easier when using a Virtual Private Network. A VPN creates a secure online connection for your computer and allows you to view geo-restricted content. With all the options available, finding the best VPN depends on which features are the best match for your online activities like safety, speed, price, or more. Read our comparison of two well-rated competitors to see which is best for you!
People use VPNs for a variety of reasons. Many prefer VPNs to add privacy and security in an increasingly dangerous online world while others are looking for a way to access content they’re restricted from viewing online due to local laws. In some countries like China, a VPN is a vital tool to skirt stiff censorship laws and find freedom of expression.
The VPN market is constantly expanding and finding the right VPN can be difficult. Our tech experts test and compare various companies based on their individual aspects and highlights. CyberGhost and PureVPN are two popular VPNs with wide customer bases, and functionality and speed are key in this contest. Read our VPN comparison for Cyberghost vs PureVPN to see how they stack up!
How We Compare Services
To get the best picture possible when we compare VPN providers, our team of experts judges each competitor on several categories that include how well they connect users, how secure they are, their price, and several other key attributes.
When a VPN has more server options from more locations, it leads to less congestion and more speed stability. While PureVPN has a large variety of over 750 servers across over 140 countries, we noted that speed was unreliable on some of them. In this respect, CyberGhost takes the crown with over 1,000 server options, though they’re spread out over just 30 countries.
Regardless of whether you are a Mac or PC user, PureVPN and CyberGhost have you covered on your preferred platform. Moreover, with either VPN subscription, you gain access across 5 multiple devices simultaneously, keeping you stay protected no matter which device you are using.
Available Streaming Services. Many users love VPNs because they unlock streaming services that are limited or fully restricted in their home countries. Although PureVPN did not support Netflix as per our last assessment, the confirm that they now do given Firefox and Chrome browser extensions on Mac or Windows (see our PureVPN review for more information). So we are happy to report that both services will work on Netflix, as well as HBO Go, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and more.
Mobile Apps. Protecting your mobile device is more important than ever as you connect to several networks every day. Apps for iOS and Android are available for your respective device with both PureVPN and CyberGhost.
Protocols. Having more encryption protocols gives you more control and nuance over the speed and security of your VPN. While CyberGhost carries the industry standard OpenVPN along with L2TP, IKeV2 and PPTP, PureVPN takes it a step further. PureVPN is also equipped with SSTP, IKeV2, as well as the revolutionary Stealth protocol.
Ad-Blocker. A built-in ad blocker is a useful tool to avoid hidden downloads and invasive advertisements online. We were happy to see both companies deliver this extra perk.
P2P Support. Some VPN services, while claiming to support user privacy, will still work with ISPs to block peer-to-peer file sharing. PureVPN explicitly states that it allows P2P sharing, and while CyberGhost does not explicitly state whether or not they support it, their no-logs policy implies that they do not block P2P downloads such as torrents.
Split-Tunneling. In some cases, users can control which of their data is routed through the VPN, and which does not. Both CyberGhost and PureVPN host split-tunneling controls on their interfaces for customers to determine the applications that use the VPN solution.
Security and Privacy
CyberGhost and PureVPN each offer excellent security and privacy options. Both services provide 256-bit encryption, and for extra protection include a kill switch, cutting off the server connection should there be a disruption. However, if logging is important to you, it should be noted that while CyberGhost has a strict no-log policy, PureVPN, which vows to a 0-log policy, has in the past released customer logs to authorities, cooperating with the FBI on a legal prosecution (unmasked alleged a stalker).
Strong customer service is a sign of legitimacy, and for digital platforms, this is incredibly important. Extensive troubleshooting and FAQ sections are available on both CyberGhost and PureVPN’s websites, which can be helpful for those looking to solve problems on their own. Users wanting to speak with a representative can rely on a contact card or live chat, included on both VPN sites. We did find that both live chat features were helpful and addressed concerns accurately and professionally.
PureVPN can be purchased for $9.95 monthly, a 6-month contract for $7.95 a month, or a 2-year contract for just $2.02 a month. A 7-day money back guarantee is included with every package which is notably less than most peers. However, in terms of payment options, PureVPN also accepts a variety of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Litecoin, and other altcoins.
CyberGhost, while still affordable, charges a bit more for all its features, but pays off when opting for longer subscriptions. It is available for $11.95 a month, $65.88 for a year, or the best value, a surprising $99.00 for 3 years, each with a 30-day money back guarantee. CyberGhost can similarly be purchased with Bitcoin as well, but does not accept other altcoins.
Which Takes the Top Spot
While comparing two independent VPN’s can often produce a clear winner, this VPN service comparison is too close to call. Customers that value protocol choice and server location options could be drawn to PureVPN. On the other hand, users wanting a sweet deal on a long-term subscription, as well as a clearer policy on keeping user logs may have a better time with CyberGhost.
