How to watch The Mandalorian online

How to Watch The Madalorian on Disney+ and Other Streaming Sites

Last updated on May 11, 2021

With the launch of the new Disney+ streaming service came the much-anticipated first episode of the latest Star Wars offering. The Mandalorian premiered on 12th November and secured the kind of audience Disney had been hoping for, around 40 million “demand expressions” for the first episode alone.

In a galaxy not so far away, you too can enjoy the latest Star Wars action and, if you hang out with us, we’ll be your intergalactic guides and show you how to watch The Mandalorian online as well as the essentials of where, when and why.

How to Watch The Mandalorian Online

Disney+ owns the exclusive rights to The Mandalorian so that’s the streaming site to head to if you want to see why everyone’s making such a fuss about Baby Yoda. Currently, Disney plus is available only in the US, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, although it is set to roll out to Europe by March 2020.

For those of you living in one of the countries where Disney plus is already available, signing up with the streaming service is no more complicated than subscribing to any other site. Simply head over to Disney+, choose your subscription, enter your personal information and payment details, and off you go. You may not get the smoothest streaming experience immediately, as Disney plus is currently ironing out a few teething issues, but you’ll certainly get access to a lot of content – both old and new.

The cheapest way to stream new Star Wars show is with an annual subscription, for which Disney plus is currently charging $69.99 per year. A monthly subscription is a little more expensive at $6.99 but still cheaper than streaming services like Netflix which costs at least $8.99 and Hulu which is $11.99 for an ad-free experience like the one Disney plus provides.

Disney plus also has a seven-day free trial available so, if you’re smart, you could wait until the end of December, by which point all eight episodes will be available, and happily binge-watch them without paying a dime.

How to Watch The Mandalorian Online in Europe

With Disney plus only set to reach Europe next year, there will be a lot of anxious Star Wars fans in the UK, Germany, France, etc. dying to get their hands-on baby Yoda and set eyes on The Mandalorian. Similarly, if you’re traveling this Christmas and decide to sneak in a quick Mandalorian fix, you’ll be out of luck and find yourselves blocked thanks to the nearly ubiquitous presence of geographical restrictions.

Geo-restrictions stop viewers from other countries from accessing content that is copyrighted to another distributor and, when it comes to Disney+, that would be multimedia giant, Sky with whom Disney has pre-existing contracts for certain content. Where Sky’s pay television services exist, namely Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and the UK, there is no Disney plus until 2020, presumably while the House of Mouse extricates itself from those deals.

In the meantime, Disney + is doing its damndest to make sure no one circumvents those geographical restrictions with fake IP addresses, proxies, or even superior VPN software. Almost as soon as Disney+ launched, a long discussion began on Reddit with users complaining of their VPN woes.

According to the posts, even unstoppable VPNs that can negotiate a way around Netflix’s geo-restrictions were battling to get into the Mouse of House. Users reported problems with both Surfshark VPN and ExpressVPN, while NordVPN and Surfshark were working but only intermittently.

Unsurprisingly, both NordVPN and Surfshark quickly resolved the problem, while ExpressVPN uncharacteristically was still battling to unblock Disney+, according to a report published at the end of November. ProtonVPN has emerged from the woodwork with one of the best services for getting around Disney+’s geographical restrictions.

Why Use a VPN to Watch The Mandalorian?

The most obvious reason to use a VPN to watch The Mandalorian or any of the other shows on Disney+ is to bypass geographical restrictions, but that’s by no means the only one.

Disney+ launched on 12th November and the hackers moved in on the same day – within hours, accounts were available for sale on hacking forums far and wide. While no software is completely foolproof, the best VPNs can boost your online protection and keeping hackers at bay simply by encrypting all the data that travels to and from your device.

Better still, that same encryption means that your ISP won’t know you stream the new Star Wars show and therefore won’t throttle your bandwidth. That can mean substantially faster internet speeds which, given some of the problems Disney plus subscribers have been experiencing with sluggish downloads, could mean the difference between loving baby Yoda and wanting to throw him out of the window along with your Apple TV!

The best VPNs for streaming videos offer high-speed connections, streaming optimized servers and profiles, military-grade encryption, and a strict no-logging policy.

Where Else Can I Watch The Mandalorian?

The official answer to that is “Nowhere” but the unofficial one is rather more detailed. Within hours of the first episode of The Mandalorian becoming available on Disney+, the pirates were hard at work, copying and distributing illegal copies of Disney+ offering.

One report claims that, within hours of The Mandalorian hitting the screens, it was already pirated and, a few hours later, not less than six different versions were available for download. Most of these were found on the notorious torrenting site, The Pirate Bay, and experts say this is simply the nature of the streaming game and that Disney’s slow roll-out has exacerbated the situation. Its clampdown on VPN access aggravates it still more.

One frustrated would-be viewer posted, “I find it absolutely insane that they expect people to just wait until the service is available in their country to watch The Mandalorian… So ridiculous. They must want to beat [Game of Thrones] as most pirated show or something.”

Why Use a VPN When Torrenting

So, you’re sitting in a flat in London, it’s cold and rainy outside, and your VPN won’t let you access any Disney plus content, let alone give you any way to watch The Mandalorian online. Frustrated, you decide to throw caution to the wind and see what you can get your hands on at The Pirate Bay. Success! The latest episodes are there – you can stream the new Star Wars show.

The next thing you know, your screen is covered in pop-up ads and your browser keeps heading over to Netflix without permission. You’ve been infected! If you’d turned on your VPN and, preferably, activated the best antivirus software, you could be enjoying that torrent, instead, you’ve got a weekend without entertainment and a hefty IT bill awaiting you.

Such infections used to be even more prevalent than they are today but they’re by no means uncommon which is why the best VPNs for torrenting are so popular. Cybercriminals have an uncanny knack of knowing just which torrents are going to attract the most viewers and making sure they’re the ones that are infected.

In April this year, just before the premiere of the final season of Game of Thrones, Anton Ivanov, a security researcher at Kaspersky, warned torrent users “that it is highly likely there will be a spike in the amount of malware disguised as new episodes of this show”. Common sense tells us, The Mandalorian offers a similar opportunity to disseminate malware which is why a VPN like Surfshark or ProtonVPN is so vital.

The Best VPNs for Watching The Mandalorian

Once you’ve figured out how to watch The Mandalorian online, it’s time to think about what you need from a VPN when you stream the new Star Wars show. At present, the most important criterium is that the VPN is actually working with Disney+.

1.  ExpressVPN

If you want to stream The Mandalorian without any buffering, you would want to seriously look at ExpressVPN as one of your best options. This is because ExpressVPN is one of, if not the fastest VPN on the market at the moment, with an uptime of 99.9%.

ExpressVPN has more than 3,000 servers in 94 countries and 160 locations worldwide. Based in the British Virgin Islands, ExpressVPN will not expose your identity or compromise on your privacy no matter who asks for your online data movements.

“We do not collect logs of your activity, including no logging of browsing history, traffic destination, data content, or DNS queries. We also never store connection logs, meaning no logs of your IP address, your outgoing VPN IP address, connection timestamp, or session duration.”

Setting up the VPN will only take a few moments and you can have as many five simultaneous connections with compatibility available for Windows, Mac, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and Amazon Kindle Fire, as well as routers.

In terms of security, ExpressVPN uses military-grade encryption, OpenVPN, DNS leak blocking, five-party DNS, IPV6 leak blocking, webRTC leak blocking, as well as a Network Lock.

If you need help using ExpressVPN, you can always submit a ticket, send an email, or contact someone directly via the online chat platform that is available to users 24/7 throughout the year. It is also one of the few VPNs that can get around the heaviest restrictions put in place by countries such as China.

ExpressVPN also offers a special deal, get 3 months free and 49% savings with their annual subscription plan!

2. Surfshark

As we mentioned above, many VPNs have been struggling, although Surfshark has managed to swim past the geo-restrictions and ProtonVPN is also proving successful.

Surfshark is probably the best VPN for Disney+ at present, providing fast speeds and the latest security protocols and, while it may not have the most user-friendly interface, but it’s simple enough to set up and get started.

Based in the British Virgin Islands where there are no mandatory data retention laws, Surfshark operates under a strict no0logging policy and has a privacy policy as robust as any other in the industry. Customer support is available 24/7 with its online chat service and its 28 standard US servers should be more than ample for providing sustained access to Disney+.

Those wanting even more security can opt for one of Surfshark’s DoubleVPN servers which use its Multi-Hop feature to divert your traffic through two secure servers in two different countries. Should Disney+ decide to clampdown on VPN access even more, this could be the answer as it makes it more difficult to trace the connection and identify it as encrypted traffic.

3. ProtonVPN

ProtonVPN has its advantages, the main one being it’s available for free. Although the free service is limited, unlike most free VPNs, ProtonVPN doesn’t apply any data or speed restrictions, choosing instead to limit users to just one device and three server locations. On the bright side, ProtonVPN assures its free users, “we don’t serve ads or secretly sell your browsing history”.

ProtonVPN’s paid packages give users even more benefits, especially when it comes to torrenting. Free users don’t have access to ProtonVPN’s P2P-optimized servers which provide a unique and effective way of downloading large files. On ProtonVPN’s P2P network, users can create multiple connections with a variety of sources, thereby speeding up the torrenting process while enjoying complete anonymity.

Based in Switzerland, ProtonVPN enjoys similarly relaxed laws on data retention as Surfshark does and operates using a similar no-logging policy, although it does record the time stamp of each user’s last successful season.  For those of you wanting a VPN to protect you while streaming or torrenting The Mandalorian, ProtonVPN is a solid option and even those subscribing to its basic plan at $4 per month can enjoy the benefits of its P2P network and robust security.

#4 NordVPN

One of the best reasons to use NordVPN for watching The Mandalorian is that you will never be stuck for a great server. This is because NordVPN has more than 5,500 servers all over the world in 59 countries. On top of that, it allows those servers to be specially categorized for things like streaming, torrenting, and extra security.

You can enjoy as many as six simultaneous connections with one NordVPN subscription as well as make use of the Quick Connect button which will start up the NordVPN algorithm to find you the best and fastest server for whatever you’re doing.

If you’re particular when it comes to security you can always rely on the dedicated IP servers “which can only be used by you and will not be shared with any other NordVPN users.”

Having jurisdiction in Panama means that you will always remain anonymous as Panama is a country without any data retention laws. This is something that is detailed in the NordVPN privacy policy.

“We do not store connection time stamps, session information, used bandwidth, traffic logs, IP addresses or other data. From the moment a user turns on the software, their internet data becomes encrypted. Any online traffic coming from their user’s device is no longer visible to ISP, third-party snoopers or cybercriminals.”

When it comes to security, NordVPN offers DNS leak protection, LAN invisibility settings, auto-connect, military-grade encryption, Onion over VPN servers, the ability to switch between OpenVPN, TCP and UDP protocols, as well as special obfuscated servers.

This is one of our top-rated VPNs for watching the Mandalorian due to its zero-logs policy, great streaming capabilities, and solid speeds.

How to Watch The Mandalorian Online For Free

IF you’re a huge Star Wars fan but not huge enough to shell out $6.99 per month for a Disney plus subscription, you can still safely and legally, watch The Mandalorian for free but you’ll have to be willing to wait a while. Unlike Netflix which has encouraged the binge-watching trend by releasing each new series in its entirety, Disney plus has taken a rather more traditional approach with The Mandalorian. The series is being rolled out in weekly installments which, analysts say, is a bonus for viewers and a clever move by Disney+.

One media consultant, Peter Csathy of CreaTV Media said, “It would be illogical for Disney to dump it out all at once… It would ruin the surprise”. It also means that Star Wars fans will happily subscribe to Disney plus for at least two months to see the whole series, the last episode of which will be available on 27th December. If Disney had taken the Netflix approach, viewers would be able to watch each episode consecutively in one sitting so could get away with just one month’s subscription – or just the free trial.

If you’re in Europe, of course, you’ll still need a VPN to stream new Star Wars show at the end of 2019 but, with Surfshark offering a seven-day free trial on its mobile apps and ProtonVPN’s free VPN service, you could watch it all both safely and legally without parting with any money at all.

The Bottom Line

The Mandalorian has been greatly hyped and greatly anticipated but its release hasn’t been quite the success Disney plus was hoping for. Certainly, it’s pulling in the subscriptions, but sluggish speeds and technical glitches made for a rough start to Disney’s streaming ambitions.

A couple of VPN providers have found a way around its geo-restrictions and, at present, you can stream The Mandalorian on Disney+ from overseas using either ProtonVPN or Surfshark. Failing that, there are illegal copies of numerous episodes appearing regularly on torrenting sites like The Pirate Bay. Should you through your ethics out of the window and choose the illegal route, which is not something we at Secure Thoughts would recommend, a VPN can help keep the almost inevitable malware threats at bay.

Before you decide to risk your device’s health and the possibility of being caught with illegal content, bear in mind that The Mandalorian isn’t exactly taking everyone’s breath away. Certainly, there are lots of positive reviews out there, but there are just as many negative ones. Obviously, hardcore Star Wars fans won’t be able to stop themselves but for the more casual viewer, waiting until the end of December and using your seven-day free trial with Disney+ is a safer way of watching The Mandalorian online for free.
