IPVanish Rating by Securethoughts.com

Although IPVanish does not support Netflix, has average connection speeds compared to some of its competitors, and can improve in support, it does offer an impressive server network with some nice advanced user options not easily found elsewhere such as OpenVPN port selection and obfuscation. In addition, we found the service to prove excellent for file sharing, and are assured of its user privacy protection. It’s a top contender in 2018 market.

For safe file sharing and streaming at an affordable price, sign up and download IPVanish VPN Software.

Is IPVanish Reliable

One area IPVanish has not shone in is customer support.

Although the company formerly had a live chat functionality, currently emailing the team is the only available contact method. Unsurprisingly, the team keeps to US business hours. While this is understandable, though many competitors offer some form of 24/7 support through outsourcing resources. Many users have also taken to popular consumer review website Trustpilot to vent about lengthy delays to opened tickets and poor service.

24/7 Support?

IPVanish claims to offer 24/7 support, they do a decent job to support that.

Rating: 4/5- Decent

Channels

Being able to get in touch with your VPN provider in a variety of ways is a nice little perk. If you need a quick fix, live chat gives you answers right away, and phone support is great for when your internet connection is going in and out. IPVanish offers live chat and e-mail support, with a ticket system on their website to track your information requests. Again though, in my experience, that live chat button is just for show.

Rating: 4/5-Live chat and e-mail support

Customer Support Test

To really put IPVanish’s customer service to the test, I signed up for a free trial, and then submitted some customer service inquiries.

I was careful to ask my questions at two very different times of day, so I could get a good sense for how factors like odd business hours or peak call volume times would influence my wait time.

Here’s what I ended up with:

E-mail Support Test #1-Wednesday/2:53 p.m.

I sent my first request for information on a Wednesday afternoon, well within the normal parameters for standard business hours.

I finally heard back from them about 4.5 hours later, a little slow in my opinion.

Rating:  4/5- Room for improvement

E-mail Support Test #2- Wednesday/11:31 p.m.

Oddly enough, I received much fast service when I tried contacting them later that night, well after the close of typical business hours.

The response was again pretty cold and abrupt, but nonetheless to the point. With a much faster response this time, I was much happier that they got back to me so quickly.

Result: 17 minutes

Rating: 5/5-Fast response at off hours

Live Chat Support Test #1 – Wednesday/2:15 p.m.

I attempted to use their live chat support feature well within their business hours and got through to them really quickly.

Rating: 5/5- Response in Minutes

Live Chat Support Test #2 – Wednesday/11:41 p.m.

So I tried their live chat feature again, this time well outside of their operating business hours. This would have been at 1:41 a.m. EST, so I didn’t expect anyone to be there.

Still, it was disappointing, because I felt like this definitely wasn’t 24/7 customer service.

Rating: 2/5-No live chat available after 5 pm

Overall IPVanish’s customer service would be perfect if they would find a system to be available round the clock. However, their service, given you do reach them during US business hours is prompt and the agents are highly knowledgeable to give you excellent troubleshooting assistance and find the best solution to your needs.

Rating: 8.5/10: This is one area where IPVanish has fallen far behind the chasing pack.

7.0
How Fast is IPVanish

IPVanish operates a far-reaching network consisting of over 850 servers in 60 countries around the world. Another plus is that P2P and BitTorrent traffic is supported on all of them.

But what about performance?

Connecting to the server in Prague, Czech Republic, we were able to get 27.28 Mbps on the downlink and even achieve a faster upload speed than before connection (although this is likely due to VPN compression).

IPVanish Review

Without IPVanish, download speed was 40.24 Mbps.

IPVanish Review

As VPN performance lags go, about a 30% drop-off isn’t the worst we’ve seen and the connection was still perfectly adequate to stream video content with. Nevertheless, we have seen better speeds with different operators.

Rating: 7/10: Good network; average connection speeds.

8.2
How Secure is IPVanish

IPVanish is based in Florida in the United States. For those looking to maximize their online security, given this country’s aggressive surveillance practices and the ability of well-funded intelligence agencies, such as the NSA, to break through “trillions” of encrypted VPN connections, this isn’t an ideal proposition. It’s not all bad news, though: the US currently has no mandatory data retention law, so the only snooping users have to worry about is that of the security apparatus.

One definite advantage IPVanish has, however, is that it is a true zero-logs provider which means that it does not keep records of user activity – at least insofar as they can be linked to a specific individual.

Rating: 8.2/10: A zero logs provider but one based in the US.

8.2
IPVanish Setup and Usability

IPVanish setup is as straightforward as any modern VPN we’ve tested. To get up and running, users simply initiate the IPVanish download from the website and click next until the program has finished setting up.

Total time taken: three minutes.

IPVanish Review

The user interface was one aspect of the program that we weren’t taken aback by. While the menu selections are ample and there are some nice features such as plotting connections in wavelength forms, overall, the UI is less minimalist and intuitive than that of some other providers that we have tested.

IPVanish Features

Feature 1: Wide server network

The IPVanish server list is a particularly impressive one, featuring over 850 servers in 60 countries. Comparing NordVPN vs IPVanish, in fact, is just about the only place where IPVanish’s network is outdone (the latter features an impressive 1,445 in 61 countries). Still, it’s a very wide network and should give users plenty of connectivity options. (Especially for those hoping to IPVanish UK media websites.)

For those that want to use IPVanish torrent options, the good news is that all its servers support P2P and BitTorrent traffic making the service a superior choice for those that want to download content through these networks.

Feature 2: Broad device support

Whether you want to encrypt and tunnel your web traffic from your Windows PC, a Linux desktop, or even install IPVanish on Firestick, Amazon’s TV streaming device, the company has gone all out to provide software and apps for nearly every platform possible. (Droid fans will be pleased to hear there’s even IPVanish for Android!) The company allows five simultaneous connections to be made per user account, so this makes it a great option for those that want to bring VPN support to their entire technology arsenal.

Feature 3: Protocol selection and OpenVPN obfuscation

For those that want to specify which VPN protocol the program connects with, the program makes it easy to select from one of its supported options. These include the widely used OpenVPN standard, OpenVPN over UDP, which offers faster performance than the equivalent protocol used over TCP, and L2TP, a good option for mobile devices that aren’t compatible with OpenVPN. IKEv2 and IPSec are also supported.

IPVanish Review

One nice feature worth pointing out is the ability to choose the OpenVPN connection port

Feature 4: Easily accessible logs

Users of a technical mindset, and those that want to get in-depth information about how the connections are being initiated, will also appreciate the ability to get easy access to the

connections log from within the settings tab on Windows. Timestamps and system messages make it easy to decipher important information about exactly what the program is doing at all times.

IPVanish Review

Feature 5: Kill Switch and DNS Leak Protection

Users that need to be absolutely certain that the program isn’t leaking out any data due to intermittent connectivity can also activate the kill switch feature, which shuts down all VPN traffic if a connection stops working.

The software also includes DNS leak protection, including automatic disabling of any outbound IPv6 DNS requests.

IPVanish Review

Rating: 9/10: Plenty of bang for users’ buck here.

Can IPVanish Unblock Netflix?

The latest reports in are in: IPVanish has fallen victim to Netflix’s measures to block traffic that it knows to be emanating from VPN servers. Those hoping to IPVanish Netflix are therefore currently going to be left disappointed.

Nevertheless, plenty of providers have been able to provision new servers quickly to work around the Netflix proxy error message. Given IPVanish’s impressive network reach we would not be surprised if the situation were to change in the new future. Those that want the latest information on whether Netflix can be accessed through the program are advised to ask directly using the live chat support.

Rating: 2/10: Not currently working but maybe in the (near) future.

8.0
IPVanish Price

IPVanish’s best value offering is currently its year subscription, which is available for $77.99, a saving of 46% on the monthly rate. The monthly rate is currently available for $10.00/month while the 3 month membership is billed at $8.99/month.

Although not the cheapest option on the home VPN market, the pricing is reasonable but we would have liked to see a longer term, two year plan, for those looking to lock down the service for the long term at the best possible price.

Users that want to avoid leaving a paper trail, digital or otherwise, are also spoiled for choice. In addition to major credit cards and PayPal, customers are able to pay via Bitcoin as well as region-specific gateways such as Gitopay and Alipay.

Rating: 8/10: Fair, but longer term options would be good.

Turok says:

IPVanish has been great for me over the past year.

Victor says:

My ISP ended up blacklisting me last year because of torrenting so I ended up getting IPVanish so I could torrent with my new provider. I’ve never had a problem with speeds and or any type of download caps. I don’t do any traveling, so getting around Netflix blocks is not an issue for me. If you’re looking for a good VPN for torrenting, this is a solid choice.

Alex Marshall says:

Hey guys! how are we feeling about a provider from the states? My initial instinct is to run a mile but it seems like this service has some good qualities. I’m not actually based in the US so the threat of the FBI requesting my data is probably not that great? Or do you think they’ll just hand over random batches and samples? I am tempted to go in another direction but DNS leak protection is starting to be really important, and few VPNS actually provide it well… any thoughts?

ST Editor says:

Hi, and thank you for the thoughtful question! It’s definitely true the US has been cracking down on privacy and users’ data, even from VPNs. In the country, authorities can request browsing data from users when there is a reasonable suspicion of a crime being committed, and in general, companies compelled to do so have little recourse aside from countersuing to prevent the information being shared. However, IPVanish, like many other VPNs can bypass this issue by simply not keeping logs on their users’ data. You can learn more on the specifics by reading IPVanish’s privacy policy, but the company does not track users’ IP addresses, usage, websites visited, or other browsing information. They do collect some information for payment processing, but this information will reveal little about your activities online, so you should be safe!

Kyle says:

There are too many red flags for me to trust this service, especially because it’s located in the US. There are safer services with the features I need to use, that have more success with unblocking popular sites.

Zach E. says:

This is hands down the easiest VPN I’ve ever used. I’m not a tech guy so when I get something I just want it to work and this definitely does the trick. Worth the price for that alone. Would never go back to using any other service.

Prinon says:

IPVanish is one of the many VPNs that I’ve tried over the years. The reason I stick with this one is primarily because of its user friendly interface, with a very simple and no over the top “flashy” connect button.
Also, I can easily choose between whatever server I want at any time and am provided with an easy to discern graph for total up- and downloaded MB’s. The only reason I am now considering switching to another VPN is that, IPVanish is not compatible with Netflix and this is a big issue for many would-be customers as well.
Streaming videos online has become a complete necessity, shouldn’t IPVanish pull up its game now?

Debby says:

IPVanish doesn’t have two-year plans and that makes me a bit sad so I have to be content with the monthly ones. That aside, IPVanish suits me to my perfect taste.

Barry says:

This is a fairly solid VPN provided you don’t need access to Netflix outside of the US or anything. I mostly use it for torrenting. I have traveled to Canada with it and it worked fine for most sites. (I didn’t even try Netflix because I prefer to use Kodi.) Not a fan of the connection logs, but I leech more than I share so I’m not as worried about that. They tend to go after sharers more than leechers.

Grayson says:

Really, why did I not hear about IPVanish VPN before? I’ve used several other VPN services before and didn’t find any satisfactory ones. All I was looking for is the right one and that’s IPVanish. It’s easy to set up, strong encryption and good performance are all I need. The user client is really easy to understand.

Tony says:

I like that IPVanish is cheap and rather fast (no problems with Netflix nor Torrenting). I also like it connects swiftly to different servers without showing any errors (many free VPNs can’t do that).

Nikky says:

IPVanish vpn is good because it works in mostly services like torrent,YouTube etc but it not works for Netflix so this is the minus point in this vpn.

ST Editor says:

Hi Nikky, I understand your concern about Netflix. If you want to stream Netflix, you could try ExpressVPN or NordVPN. Users have had a lot of luck accessing Netflix with these VPN providers.

Scott says:

What’s the best way for me to set this VPN up? I know that you can have a bunch of different devices but I don’t see anywhere in the options how to do set them up. Is there anything I need to do to make sure I don’t get flagged for using too many accounts? Please help!

ST Editor says:

Hi Scott, and thanks for the question! Installing IPVanish on your devices is as easy as downloading the client they need. You can find the files on the company’s website, and on the Apple App Store and Google Play store for mobile devices. When you’re setting them up, make sure to enter the user credentials you input when creating your account. Because IPVanish lets you have up to 5 simultaneous connected devices, you don’t need to do anything but register with the right account to start using the VPN! Let us know how it goes!

Jassy says:

Honestly, IPVanish is one of the best VPN providers out there when it comes to protecting your privacy online. It is at the top of my list, along with ExpressVPN and NordVPN.

Sean Amber says:

I was under a cyber attack and most of my online credit card information was stolen by the hackers. Now I am using IPvanish VPN from last few months and its working really well.

LIZZY says:

I am impressed with this VPN exceot for the undeniable fact that it robs me off my connection speed. It rarely works on wifi or 4G.

ST Editor says:

HI Lizzy, I am sorry to hear you are having issues with connection speed, Wi-Fi, and 4G. You could try HideMyAss or SaferVPN to see if either one of those provides the service you need.

FeeFiFoFum says:

I can use 5 devices while using IPVanish and I do! It’s really fast to use, and I barely notice that I’m even using it, cos there are no lags. I really like the DNS leak protection and no logs policy, and the 256-bit encryption. Good job, IPVanish!

Katty Blair says:

IPVannish is fast, easy to set up, reliable and affordable. The VPN cyber-security is just perfect. Wish I knew IPVannish before now.

Arnold says:

I really like the companies no log policy. Makes me feel secure. I love that it supports my Apple TV. Very fast with an amazing customer support. Been using this for a while now with no issues.

Jannie Carter says:

Surf the web without a trace. Make any internet connection secure. Plenty of servers and great service overall.

Robert says:

IPVanish doesn’t drain your internet, it’s really secure and very easy to use. For someone like me, who’s a bit of a technophobe, it was great, and I could stream to my heart’s content. The customer support team were very friendly too, and I was really impressed overall.

QWERTY555 says:

I can use IPVanish with all of my devices including my XBox BUT this doesn’t unblock Netflix, which is a big problem for me. Yes, I can stream on 5 different devices and it’s really fast, yes they throw in some extras, but come on – give us Netflix!

Paddy T. says:

I really like that IPVanishVPN has a kill switch – I don’t want to be unprotected while browsing. I also like that 5 devices can be used at the same time, which is enough for me. I wasn’t sure this VPN was for me – it doesn’t unblock Netflix and I’m quite a fan of NordVPN – so I tried it out for a week, liked it and have kept with it ever since. It’s pretty fast too.

Geraldine I. says:

I’ve used IPVanish for quite a while now, I really like the no logs policy – I use this for traveling, but there’s no live chat option which annoys me

Leeka says:

I use IPVanish for the second year in a row now; besides some speed issues, they’re reliable and affordable. I never had customer support issues with them.

Lyndon Seitz says:

Sorry to hear about your issues with them, I hope your problem gets resolved quickly and amicably.

Best,
Lyndon

Dingi says:

I have installed the IPVANISH but still don’t know how it works. How do I see that it protects me and no one is prying with my privacy

Lyndon Seitz says:

Hey Dingi,

This might be best answered by IPVanish‘s customer service team, as I think they’ll be able to walk you through the process and answer questions on this more accurately than I can.

Best,
Lyndon
