VPNs are taking the internet by storm as the latest way to take charge of your online security.
By switching your IP address out, they give you access to any content you want, no matter where in the world you are.
Secure servers and state of the art encryption protects your from prying eyes, giving you privacy and the ability to browse anonymously.
There are plenty of companies to choose from out there, so we’ve taken the liberty of breaking it down for you. Here we’ll review IPVanish, and show you how well they compare to the competition.
We’ll give you the information you need to make an informed purchase and shop smart. Let’s get into it.
Will IPVanish Work on My Operating System?
Okay, so the first question you want to ask yourself when you start shopping around for a VPN is: is it going to work with my operating system?
Not all software is created equal, and what works on one device may not work on them all.
Most VPNs list the operating systems their software is compatible with on their website, so be sure to check it out before you sign up.
IPVanish does pretty well in this category, as it’s compatible with all major operating systems, including Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android.
(And just as a side note, the #1 best selling VPN app on the Apple App Store)
Rating: 5/5 -Works with all operating systems
What Kind of Features Does IPVanish Have?
This is a pretty broad sweeping category. A VPN’s features really define the quality of their service, and help you to decide how good of a deal their service is for their monthly fee.
There’s a lot of ground to cover here, so let’s go over it piece by piece.
Feature #1: Multiple Connections
The first feature you want to look at is how many simultaneous connections they allow you to have.
If you live in a household where you have a few devices you’d like to cover, make sure the VPN provider will allow you to cover those at no extra charge.
IPVanish offers its customers up to two simultaneous connections with every service package, without having to pay for additional coverage.
It’s not a ton of coverage, but it’s great that it’s included with the service plan, and will at least cover your mobile and home devices.
Rating: 4/5-Covers up to two devices
Feature #2: Money Back Guarantee
This category is pretty straightforward, and really is a great judge of how much a company stands behind their product. If you’re not satisfied, are they going to be willing to issue you a refund?
IPVanish stands behind their product 100%, with a money back guarantee for any customer that feels they didn’t get the very best service from them.
Rating: 5/5-Refunds available
Feature #3: Number of Servers
Next on the list, you want to make sure the company has a good amount of servers.
This matters for a few reasons, but one of them being the more servers they have, the easier the software will travel with you, if you have to head overseas.
Also, more servers means greater chances of distributing people who eat up a lot of bandwidth, so your connection isn’t slowed downed by an overloaded server.
IPVanish doesn’t have a huge network, but theirs is definitely on the bigger side, with servers located in 60 countries and 146 cities around the world.
Rating: 4.5/5-Protection that travels with you
Feature #4: Referral Program
This is a feature you won’t see a whole lot, but a few companies do offer incentive programs for referring new customers to them.
Typically your reward is some free service, so be sure to see if you can get some kickbacks for sending some of your buddies their way.
IPVanish does offer a referral program.
Rating: 5/5-No referral program
Feature #5: Data Logging
There are usually two main reasons people want to sign up for a VPN:
- To give them access to any content they want
- To protect their privacy
It makes sense then that a VPN company that logs your internet activity is a big no-no. You’re paying them for privacy, not to look over your shoulder, right?
IPVanish never logs any of their users’ internet activity, so your browsing is always totally private, and totally anonymous.
Rating: 5/5-No activity logging, ever
Feature #6: Bandwidth
If you’re a streaming junkie or a downloading maniac, this is a category you really want to pay attention to.
If they have caps on your monthly bandwidth, you’re constantly going to have to keep an eye on how much you use.
IPVanish offers its customers completely unlimited bandwidth, with their service plans. You can download and stream to your heart’s content, without ever having to worry about hitting a cap.
Rating: 5/5-Unlimited bandwidth for everyone
How Secure Is It?
When you use a VPN, you’re counting on the guys on the other end to do their part to keep your information safe.
Secure servers and top of the line encryption are a must, so don’t settle for anything less than the best.
IPVanish protects your information with 256-bit encryption, and an L2TP VPN protocol for extra security, with all of their service plans.
Rating: 5/5-Unbeatable protection
What’s the Set Up Process Like?
If it takes you an hour to set up the connection, they’re going to lose points. As simple as this concept is, it should be equally simple to use, and have a streamlined set up process.
Don’t let them make you jump through hoops to get your connection in place. Set up is fairly simple with IPVanish.
All you do is download the software from their site that’s compatible with your operating system, and get it installed. From that point, you’ll have to log in, and your dashboard is ready to go.
Rating: 5/5-Fast, easy set up
Is it Easy to Use?
Now that you have the software installed, hopefully you’re not spending all day trying to use the software.
If changing servers is complicated, or you have to log in every time you change your connection, there’s a problem. IPVanish’s software was very simple to navigate, and very user-friendly.
Rating: 5/5-Straightforward, easy to use
IPVanish only prompted me to log in once, when I initially set up the software on my computer.
It wasn’t difficult to find the log in screen, and once I put in my credentials, I was immediately presented with the connections portion of the dashboard.
The software laid everything out really nicely, so I knew exactly where to go to change my server.
They even had a few different options available for ways I could change my server.
Based on what type of online activity I was going to be doing (the more bandwidth I would be using, the system would set me up with a more available server).
What If I Need Help?
With VPN software, customer support is hugely important.
Connections will fail, passwords will get forgotten, and when it all goes down, you want to make sure they have someone there to help you out any time, day or night.
IPVanish claims to offer 24/7 support, they do a decent job to support that.
Rating: 4/5- Decent
Being able to get in touch with your VPN provider in a variety of ways is a nice little perk.
If you need a quick fix, live chat gives you answers right away, and phone support is great for when your internet connection is going in and out.
IPVanish offers live chat and e-mail support, with a ticket system on their website to track your information requests. Again though, in my experience, that live chat button is just for show.
Rating: 3.5/5-Live chat and e-mail support
Customer Support Test
To really put IPVanish’s customer service to the test, I signed up for a free trial, and then submitted some customer service inquiries.
I was careful to ask my questions at two very different times of day, so I could get a good sense for how factors like odd business hours or peak call volume times would influence my wait time.
Here’s what I ended up with:
E-mail Support Test #1-Wednesday/2:53 p.m.
I sent my first request for information on a Wednesday afternoon, well within the normal parameters for standard business hours.
I finally heard back from them about 4.5 hours later, a little slow in my opinion.
Result: 6 hours and 32 minutes
Rating: 3.5/5- Slow
E-mail Support Test #2- Wednesday/11:31 p.m.
Oddly enough, I received much fast service when I tried contacting them later that night, well after the close of typical business hours.
The response was again pretty cold and abrupt, but nonetheless to the point. With a much faster response this time, I was much happier that they got back to me so quickly.
Result: 17 minutes
Rating: 4/5-Fast response at off hours
Live Chat Support Test #1 – Wednesday/2:15 p.m.
I attempted to use their live chat support feature well within their business hours and got through to them really quickly.
Rating: 5/5- Response in Minutes
Live Chat Support Test #2 – Wednesday/11:41 p.m.
So I tried their live chat feature again, this time well outside of their operating business hours. This would have been at 1:41 a.m. EST, so I didn’t expect anyone to be there.
Still, it was disappointing, because I felt like this definitely wasn’t 24/7 customer service.
Rating: 2/5-No live chat available after 5 pm
Overall I was pretty disappointed by IPVanish’s customer service.
Not only were their claims of 24/7 service pretty misleading, but even their e-mail responses weren’t consistently prompt, and the live chat feature was never even available to me.
Overall Service Rating: 7.5/20-Misleading support claims
How Fast is IPVanish?
I was hoping that after a major letdown with their customer service, IPVanish would redeem themselves with a fast connection. I installed the software, and ran a couple of speed tests.
However, even this didn’t go very smoothly. Immediately after installing their software, my fast computer was incredibly slow and bogged down.
I actually received this error message the first time I tried to run a speed test:
After reloading the page, I was able to get a speed test to work, albeit very very slowly.
As you can see, the speed wasn’t hugely different, technically speaking. However, I would have liked to see less of a difference with the download speeds.
Rating: 4/5-A little slower with the VPN
How Much Does IPVanish Cost?
If you ever need a tie breaker to decide which VPN you’re going to go with, this category will do the trick. No matter how many features they offer, if they’re bleeding you dry, it’s a no go.
IPVanish offers affordable rate plans, with fees starting at just $10 a month, and incremental discounts for purchasing a year or 3 months at a time-overall a great price for what you’re getting.
Rating: 5/5-Super low monthly rates
Finally, you want to look for that one thing that draws you in to purchase a VPN. You’re the ultra-sought after customer, and it’s their job to sweeten the deal, so demand the icing on the cake.
In this case, the X-factor wasn’t necessarily something positive. I was really frustrated with how much IPVanish bogged down my computer.
I’m not running a $2,000 Mac by any means, but every other VPN software I’ve ever used worked seamlessly with my computer, never slowing my system down.
Except for this one. Pages took forever to load, and the entire function of my device seemed be labored by this latest installation.
Immediately after uninstalling the software, my connection improved, and everything sped up again.
While IPVanish’s software is very cutting edge, it may eat up more memory than is necessary, and I shudder to think of how smaller systems would handle this hefty program’s capacity.
Rating: 4/10- A little slow
