Why Use a VPN to Live Stream the Olympics

The problem with having just one free broadcaster is that you pretty much have to lump it; no matter the quality of the broadcast.

For example, NBC’s coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics left a lot to be desired.

They were sometimes late to air key events such as medal ceremonies, while also very heavily American-centric in terms of tone, sometimes not broadcasting events the US team was not in. It was frustrating for anyone who was more interested in the competition itself instead of inflated medal tallies.

While that may be annoying, at least they were able to watch the Olympics live. Anyone located outside the US found content was blocked, and that included video content on Facebook and Twitter.

With a VPN, you’ll be able to access streams from across the globe, and it’ll get you past any restrictions like the above. You could go for the BBC Olympics channel, or NBC’s coverage.

It works by giving you a different IP address when you connect to the internet. This means you can pretend to be from anywhere in the world, as long as the VPN has a server location in the region you’d like to connect to.

How to Watch Winter Olympic Games Online With a VPN

To make it easier, we’ve laid out a short guide to getting started using a computer. As you’ll see, it should only take a few minutes to get it all working.

  1. To begin, you’ll need to choose a VPN. (We’ve laid out a few of the best below.)
  2. Once you’ve signed up, download their client for your operating system, i.e. Mac/Windows.
  3. Open the client and sign in.
  4. Choose a server location from the list that pops up. You’ll need the location to be the same as the region you want to unblock.
  5. After you’ve connected to the VPN, go the Olympics channel stream of your choice. (i.e.: BBC, NBC.)
  6. You’ll be free to access their content, although you may have to disable ad blockers to get the NBC stream to start.

I lived streamed the Olympics on NBC and was NOT impressed. No commentary whatsoever. The alternative is to wait for the tape delay, which basically isn’t that great either. I think I’ll try one of these other services in the future.

Hello! We recommend taking a look at some of the VPN services we listed in our article to stream the games. Most of these services have free streams available for many of the sports, so you wouldn’t even have to pay. A VPN can help you access the services, but in some cases are not able to give you free access to live events.
