Summary:

Today I reviewed My Private Network to see how they compared to other VPNs out there.

Pros:

  • unlimited connections
  • super easy to set up and use
  • very low monthly rates
  • unlimited bandwidth

Cons:

  • limited customer support
  • slower connection
  • not compatible with Linux

Overall Score:  81/100

This score is lower than the 97/100 scored by our top rated VPN – Express VPN.

For the most part, My Private Network is a tough one to beat, scoring very high in our review.

VPNs, or Virtual Private Networks, are an easy way to protect your privacy while you’re on the internet.

By changing your IP address and encrypting your data, they give you access to any content you want – even what may be blocked by geographical censorship restrictions.

With state of the art encryption, you can protect yourself from things like identity theft, and have peace of mind on public WiFi networks.

Not all VPNs are created equal though, and there are a lot of them out there to choose from.

To help you decide who you can trust to protect your information and give you unlimited access to all of your favorite content, I’ve reviewed one company, My Private Network.

Here I’ll go through how you can shop smart and get the best deal for your money, and show you how My Private Network stacks up to the competition.

Will My Private Network Work on My Operating System?

As with shopping for anything, there’s a certain process of elimination you’ll want to go through to start narrowing your options.

With VPNs, the first thing you want to look at is their software compatibility.

Though most VPN connections can be manually configured on any device, their software may only work on certain systems.

This is somewhat the case with My Private Network. Their software is compatible with Windows and Mac, and they have apps for devices that run iOS or Android.

However, you will have to manually configure connections on Linux devices.

Rating: 4/5 – Software compatible with everything but Linux

What Kind of Features Does My Private Network Have?

This is a large category made up of the various perks each VPN has to offer.

The more features a VPN has to offer, the better the value, and the more options and protection you’re getting for your monthly fee.

Here we’ll go over each feature you may see a VPN offer, and what you can expect from My Private Network.

Feature #1: Multiple Connections

This is an important category that refers to the number of devices a VPN provider will allow you connect to simultaneously.

If you have a few different gadgets you’d like a more secure connection with, or multiple people in your household that use the internet for personal business, pay close attention to this category.

This is one feature that My Private Network takes the cake with. They let you connect their software to an unlimited number of devices.

The only restrictions are on connecting at two different locations, like work and home, at the same time.

This means that if you’re on the go using this VPN, someone at home won’t be able to use the software.

Rating:  5/5 – Unlimited connections

Feature #2:  Money Back Guarantee

As with anything you buy, it’s always nice to know that if you aren’t getting the quality of service you were promised, there’s something on paper that says you’re entitled to a refund

My Private Network has a no questions asked return policy that I absolutely love.

There is no time frame, there are no stipulations or parameters – you simply contact their support staff and they’ll process your refund within 24 hours.

Rating:  5/5 – Excellent anything-goes return policy

Feature #3:  Number of Servers

The number of servers a VPN provider has to offer can have a large impact on the speed of your connection.

If you go with a company that has very few servers to choose from – say, less than 10 – then it’s more likely they will quickly become overloaded with users, slowing down your connection.

My Private Network has a decent number of servers, with locations in 24 countries around the world.

Understandably, their servers are primarily located in countries with the most open and uncensored access, primarily in Europe and North America.

Rating:  3.5/5 – Enough servers to ensure a smooth connection

Feature #4:  Referral Program

Sometimes VPN providers will reward customers that spread recommendations of their business for them with free or discounted service.

Though it’s more of an affiliate program with My Private Network, users can receive 20% of the total gross sales that they direct to the company, which can add up to some serious dough.

Rating:  4/5 – Direct cash affiliate program

Feature #5:  Data Logging

As someone who’s shopping around for internet security software, you obviously care about your privacy while you’re online.

Make sure that the VPN provider you select doesn’t keep any records of your activity online, or what are you paying them for?

My Private Network doesn’t keep any logs of their users activity, though they do maintain firewall records that indicate things like dropped connections and bandwidth usage.

However, no internet activity is stored.

Rating:  5/5 – No data logging

Feature #6:  Bandwidth

Bandwidth refers to the amount of data you can transfer over a server connection.

The more you’re allowed, the faster things like streaming services and downloading music will be, so pay close attention to this feature if you’re addicted to Netflix or listen to a lot of online radio.

My Private Network offers their customers completely unlimited bandwidth with all of their service plans, so you never have to worry about limiting your activity.

Rating:  5/5 – Completely unlimited bandwidth

How Secure Is It?

Most people sign up for a VPN for one of two reasons:  security or accessibility. That being said, don’t sell yourself short when it comes to security the VPN you wind up choosing.

Encryption is a basic service that every VPN offers, so make sure you’re getting the very best, along with multiple security protocols to suit your needs.

The thing to keep in mind is that with encryption, typically the stronger it is, the more it can bog down your connection.

My Private Network offers a few different protocols, from PPTP with weaker encryption, to OpenVPN, which runs the strongest encryption there is (256-bit, the one I tested here).

Rating:  5/5 – Multiple options for security

What’s the Set Up Process Like?

If you’re still pretty new to the idea of VPNs, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Lots of people out there are interested in this service, but still trying to wrap their brains around how it works.

A lengthy and complicated set up makes a VPN lose big points in my book, because it limits that service to the tech-savvy.

My Private Network was a total breeze to set up. I love software that takes care of itself, and that’s exactly what theirs does.

All you have to do is download the software that’s compatible with your system from their website, and begin the installation process. From there, the wizard will guide you through.

The only part where you need to offer some input is selecting the servers you’d like to be able to access. Simply check off the ones you’d like to have the option of using, and wrap up the installation.

However, keep in mind that if you’re using the VPN on a Linux device, their software isn’t compatible, and you’ll have to manually configure the VPN

Rating:  5/5 – Very straightforward set up for compatible OS’s

Is it Easy to Use?

Once again, VPNs shouldn’t just be for the technologically inclined.

VPNs that are easy to use and connect to will save users a lot of time and frustration in the end, so make sure that when it’s all said and done you can just point and click to connect.

It doesn’t get much easier with My Private Network.

After you install their software, rather than having an additional open window, you’ll just have a little icon in your notifications menu (on Windows systems).

Simply right click on that icon, and select a server to connect to. Boom – done.

Rating:  5/5 – Connecting couldn’t be easier

Logging In

One of my favorite things about My Private Network’s software is that you only have to log in one time – during the installation and setup process.

After that, even if you close the program or reboot your system, you stay logged in and don’t have to do it again!

Changing Servers

Changing servers with My Private Network is also extremely straightforward.

Just go into the icon in your notifications menu, right click it, then disconnect from your current server, and reconnect to a different one.

What If I Need Help?

With online services in particular, great customer service is absolutely key.

When you’re purchasing anything over the internet, there’s a certain degree of blind trust involved, since you’re performing transactions with someone who could be anywhere in the world.

Great customer service tells you that a company isn’t just there to take your money – they want you to get something worthwhile in return for it.

24/7 Support?

VPNs are something that are used by people all over the world, which means customers and providers alike are in a wide range of time zones.

This is why 24/7 support is so important.

Even if it’s 2 in the afternoon where you are and 2 in the morning where the support staff are, you still need to be able to get service in a timely manner.

My Private Network doesn’t specify it anywhere on their website, but based on my personal experience with their customer service, it’s definitely not 24/7.

Though you can usually get a response on weekends, it’s only within their normal business hours (they’re located somewhere in the UK, so keep that in mind).

Rating:  1/5 – Support hours limited

Channels

The more ways you can get in touch with their customer service, the better.

Features like live chat and phone support often mean much prompter service, whereas email support often means waiting overnight for a response.

My Private Network only offers e-mail support, so you have to wait a little while for a response most of the time.

Keep this in mind if you’re using their service for important document transfers and absolutely need protection – connection problems could take a while to resolve.

Rating:  2/5 – Only e-mail support available

Customer Support Test

I wanted to see just how good My Private Network’s customer service was, so I ran a couple of tests on them at a couple of different times of the day.

I gauged their response times, as well as the quality of their service, to see how they treated their customers.

E-mail Support Test #1-Thursday/10:47 a.m.

My initial inquiry with customer support was about the trouble I was having connecting to their server.

I provided them with the e-mail address associated with my account, but four minutes later when I received a response, they again asked me what the e-mail address on my account was.

Hmmm. Well, at least they got to me in four minutes.

Result: 4 minutes

Rating: 4/5 – Fast service, but not the most helpful

E-mail Support Test #2-Thursday/10:51 p.m.

I followed up with my original support request well into the evening, to see how long the response time was after business hours.

Though the service was much more concise, it took them much longer to respond this time.

Result: 8 hours 47 minutes

Rating: 2/5 – Longer wait after business hours

Overall, I just wasn’t super impressed with My Private Network’s support.

There’s only one way to get a hold of them, and you could wind up waiting overnight for a response that may not even address your issues. Not the best.

Overall Support Rating:  6/10 – Variable response times

How Fast is My Private Network?

Something that’s hugely important when selecting a VPN is knowing how fast the connection is.

However, unless you actually sign up for and use their service, there’s really no way of knowing how fast it’s going to be.

With every VPN under the sun claiming to have the fastest connection on the planet, there’s only one way to find out:  by putting them to the test.

I ran a speed test on my original home internet connection, then compared it to the results of my connection with the VPN. As you can see, the difference was pretty substantial.

I had a much faster connection without the VPN.

Rating:  2.5/5 – Pretty slow connection

How Much Does My Private Network Cost?

In the end, your decision will ultimately come down to dollars and cents (or Euros, or whatever).

The bottom line is, there are plenty of VPNs out there to choose from, so make them compete for your business. Don’t settle for a service plan that’s overpriced.

Anything over $15 a month is pretty above average.

myprivatecost

My Private Network has some very affordable service plans, starting at around $5 per month.

However, in order to access all of their servers, you’ll need to purchase the more expensive plan (though this is still very cheap), so keep that in mind before you go to check out.

Rating:  5/5 – Super low monthly rates

The X Factor

There’s always that vibe that a company puts off. Often times with online services it can be a pretty sketchy one.

Maybe it’s their outlandish service promises, or the lack of information on their product.

Either way, a company’s professionalism and honest advertising can go a long way in sealing the deal.

My Private Network is very open and honest about their products, with plenty of information on their website to fill in the blanks.

This coupled with their simple software and awesome money back guarantee gives me the distinct feeling that they legitimately want to keep their customers happy and coming back.

Rating:  18/20 – Seems legit

Thanks for the article. VPN is good if you want to hide your real location. However, about content streaming, I prefer a DNS service.
