In today’s day and age, everything happens on the internet. In this endless virtual world, we’ve made it so we can do everything from grow virtual potatoes, to check our bank statements and watch TV.
However, it’s no secret that all of this online activity comes with a pretty steep security risk.
That being said, a lot of people have opted to sign up with VPN providers to protect themselves from nasty things like fraud and identity theft.
With the influx in cybercrim,e has come a thriving market ready to meet the demands of the paranoid population, and the internet has grown with VPN providers offering features with their services.
To sort out the duds, you’ll want to note a few key points before you sign up, to make sure that the provider meets all of your security needs on all of your devices, without bogging down your system.
Here we’ll go over one of those companies, NexTGenVPN, and how it compares to the competition.
With any company you do business with, there’s always that indescribable factor that makes or breaks your impression of the service.
Maybe it was the accessibility of the web site, the tone of the marketing, or even just the general impression of the company’s attitude.
In this case, one factor I really noticed was that this was a foreign company with a bad web site, plain and simple.
While it’s great that entrepreneurs all over the world are entering the VPN market, I shouldn’t be able to tell that they’re not native English speakers.
The poor sentence structure on their website made it seem like they literally ran all of their content through Google translate and posted it to the site as is.
Not only was the dialogue very sloppy and difficult to articulate, but the site itself is set up in such a manner that it’s extremely difficult to tell exactly which features are offered.
There is vague terminology used that is never explained (Premium Bandwidth for instance, with no explanation of the actual limitations of that package).
All in all, I wasn’t impressed with this company. The choppy language made it confusing and difficult to ascertain exactly what they were trying to say, and the web site was all over the place.
Rating: 2/10-Web site disorganized, language difficult to understand
Okay, now that we’ve run through all of the components of VPN shopping, let’s summarize here and see how NexTGenVPN stacks up.

- very good security protocols
- fast, 24/7 customer service
- reasonably priced
- fast connection
- easy to use (once it’s set up)
- not compatible with all operating systems
- bandwidth limits
- support only available through e-mail
- no money back guarantee
- no referral program
- very difficult set up

- difficult to switch servers

Overall Score: 68.5/100
All in all, NexTGenVPN offers a pretty secure VPN connection, with speeds that can keep up with standard servers. However, the drawbacks definitely outweigh the perks here.
Though their customer service is prompt and effective, with such a difficult set up, it will still frustrate even the seasoned VPN user. Bottom line, there are simpler programs out there at lower rates.

affordable monthly rates, with pay as you go option
fast customer service
very complicated set up
no money back guarantee
limited server locations
not compatible with all operating systems
Customer service is a hugely important part of selecting a good VPN provider (particularly when the set up is as complicated as it was with this one).
You’ll want to make sure they’re available any time you need help, and that you can reach them in a variety of ways.
Though NexTGenVPN only offers customer support through e-mail, with the option for a call back, overall I found the service to be very prompt and friendly, and right to the point.
Having 24/7 support can really help you out sometimes, especially when it’s 3 a.m. and you’re trying to pull up your flight itinerary at the airport.
NexTGenVPN offers round the clock service to its customers, with a maximum response time of less than 24 hours, and an average of less than 2.
Rating: 5/5-Fast, 24/7 customer service
Being able to contact customer service through live chat, phone, or e-mail is nice because it puts you in control of how much human interaction you want to have.
If you have a screaming baby on your hip, live chat is your new best friend. But if your connection is slow, being able to call and ask for help could save you some major frustration.
Rating: 3/5-No live chat support
Customer Support Test
I decided to have NexTGenVPN put their money where their mouth is, and see just how fast their customer service was.
I chose to contact them at two different times, once in the middle of the night, and once during normal business hours, to see how their response times fluctuated between the two.
E-mail Support Test #1-Saturday/12:04 a.m.
I initially contacted NexTGenVPN’s support team in the middle of the night to ask about a set up issue I was having.
Their response was very polite and to the point, and immediately resolved my issue. I couldn’t believe how fast they responded too!
Result: 7 minutes
Rating: 5/5-Fast, friendly service
E-mail Support Test #2-Saturday/12:01 p.m.
I contact them again that afternoon to see how fast they could respond, and was again greeted by a very prompt response, and super-friendly service.
Result: 18 minutes
Rating: 5/5- Less than 20 minutes during peak hours is amazing
Though NexTGenVPN only offers support through e-mail, they do offer you the option of receiving a call back on your service ticket form.
They even have bilingual support, in both English and French! Their service options are limited, but their response is very fast, and service was friendly and helpful.
Overall Rating: 18/20
If you use anything that involves streaming, from Pandora to Netflix, you want to make sure that your VPN can keep up.
Too slow of a connection will result in endless buffering and sluggish downloads, so make sure you get a VPN that’s got the moxie to keep up.
I ran a speed test on NexTGenVPN’s software to see how it compared to my original connection.
As you can see, the connection was only marginally slower when using the VPN software, and I didn’t notice a difference when doing all my other basic internet activities.
Rating: 4.5/5-A little slower, but still pretty fast
One big thing that NexTGenVPN really prides themselves on is their self-proclaimed military grade encryption.
They also offer firewall protection with all of their plans, and multiple redundancy protocols to make sure your information never travels outside of the network you’re on.
Rating: 4/5-Secure encryption, better protocols with more expensive packages
If the VPN provider you sign up with has overly complex software that requires you to jump through several hoops to establish your connection each time, it’s hardly worth the effort.
As much as people access the internet, it should be a quick enough process that you can connect and disconnect at will, with little difficulty.
Once the software and configuration files are downloaded, and your computer’s settings are adjusted, and the VPN profile is created, it’s very simple to use NexTGenVPN’s software.
From that point, all you have to do is click on your profile to connect, and you’re online. You just have to survive the set up process to get you there.
Rating: 3/5-Easy to connect, confusing login process
For the software I used with NexTGenVPN – their Open VPN program – there was actually no login required. However, this was somewhat confusing.
If you didn’t follow their set up instructions exactly, you were still presented with a login screen.
At which point you would go through a circular pattern of trying to establish a connection and having to find your server all over again.
Changing servers wasn’t too bad, compared to the set up process, but it’s still a bit of a doozy.
You have to set up another connection profile, which means digging back into that configuration file you downloaded and selecting one based on the country code at the beginning of the file name.
Overall, it requires way too much digging through your computer, and is something I feel the software should have built into itself, rather than using external files for.
What’s the Set Up Process Like?
I went and did a free trial of NexTGenVPN, just to get an accurate picture of exactly how well it works and how user-friendly the whole process is.
While VPN software is certainly gaining popularity, there are a lot of people out there that are very new to the concept, and may be intimidated by the set up process.
I have to say, NexTGenVPN was a pretty big fail here. The set up process was lengthy and complicated, requiring both a software download and install, as well as a configuration package download.
After that, I still had to follow the set up instructions on the website and configure my computer’s network connection, and then set up the VPN profile on the software itself.
All in all, the process seemed overly complicated and all over the place.
I wound up having to contact customer support to complete the process, and even then, was frustrated by the lengths I had to go to to set up the VPN connection.
Rating: 1/5-Complicated set up
Will NexTGenVPN Work on My Operating System?
One of the first questions you should ask yourself when shopping around for a VPN provider is: will they work on my operating system?
Particularly if you carry a variety of devices, having something that is compatible with all of them will save you from having to carry multiple plans just to have them all covered.
NexTGenVPN covers at least the most popular systems, including Mac, Windows, and Linux. However, their site doesn’t specify for coverage on operating systems such as iOS or Android.
Especially for smartphone users, double check and make sure that you’re okay with your mobile devices not having VPN protection before signing up for a plan with NexTGenVPN.
Rating: 3/5-Not for Android phone users
The next thing you’ll want to look at when trying to determine which VPN provider to go with is what kind of features they have.
While it may not seem like that big of a deal, things like fast customer service and multiple connections can really pay off in the long run.
Don’t short yourself – make sure you get what you’re paying for. Here’s a rundown of some of the features NexTGenVPN has.
Feature #1: Multiple Connections
If you use a variety of Wi-Fi-enabled devices, you’ll want to make sure that your VPN provider allows you to use your plan on more than one device at a time, without having to pay an additional fee.
It appears that NexTGenVPN does allow multiple connections, but you have to elect for those when you sign up for your service plan, and it significantly raises your monthly rate.
Rating: 2.5/5-Multiple connections allowed…for a price
Feature #2: Money Back Guarantee
If you’re just trying on a company for size, the last thing you want is to wind up stuck with a service contract that you hate.
A lot of VPN providers offer a money back guarantee to back the quality of their service. Unfortunately, NexTGenVPN isn’t one of them-no refunds with this company.
Rating: 0/5-No money back guarantee
Feature #3: Number of Servers
Having servers located all over the world means that you can take your online protection with you wherever you go.
The more servers, the more global coverage you get, and the more you’re guaranteed that you’ll be getting the most out of your monthly fee even when you’re on the road.
NexTGenVPN doesn’t have a very large network of servers, with locations in only 11 countries worldwide, and those are located primarily in North America and Europe.
Rating: 1/5-Very few servers outside of Europe
Feature #4: Referral Program
This isn’t a feature that many VPN companies offer, but it’s a nice one to have.
Basically, companies with referral programs will often give you and a customer you’ve referred some free perks, like a month of free service.
The idea is that they reward their customers for their word of mouth marketing, and everybody wins.
That being said, NexTGenVPN definitely does not have a referral program, so there aren’t any perks for recommending them to your buddies.
Rating: 0/5-No referral program
Feature #5: Data Logging
This is a practice done by companies that own servers and want to keep track of their users’ activity.
Of course, the whole point of using a VPN is to keep your activity private and anonymous, so this kind of thing is a big no-no for folks in the internet security business.
Security is the big selling point for NexTGenVPN, so they don’t log any of their users’ activity.
Rating: 5/5-No data logging
Feature #6: Bandwidth
If you’re big into streaming and downloading on the internet (and let’s face it, these days, who isn’t?), then bandwidth limits should be a big concern for you.
You want to make sure you have plenty of room for streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, without constantly worrying about hitting a cap.
NexTGenVPN has varying levels of bandwidth limits, depending on the service plan you sign up for.
While none of them offer unlimited bandwidth, the more you sign up for, the more you get, and the more you save.
Just be wary of your own internet usage before signing up for a plan with NexTGenVPN.
Rating: 2/5-Bandwidth limitations, have to pay more to get more
Perhaps the biggest deciding factor in selecting the VPN that’s right for you is the sticker price. With so much competition on the market, there’s no reason to pay more for similar service.
NexTGenVPN is relatively low priced, at less than $15 a month for their Open VPN service (which is the trial service that I used).
They also offer a pay as you go plan, which is great for users who aren’t sure how long they’ll be using the service.
