Cyber attacks and online privacy vioation are on the rise, meaning that protecting yourself online is more vital than ever before. A strong VPN can help defend you, and today, we compare two top providers to see which comes out on top. Who will win between NordVPN and PrivateVPN?

Cyber crime is an increasingly common problem, with roughly 89,000 cases reported in the first half of 2017. Nearly 500 individuals fell victim to hacks every day. The financial damage is often the main consideration, but your online exposure can have other equally devastating effects. While the internet offers amazing things, it also makes us vulnerable, making it important to always be safe when browsing. One great solution is the Virtual Private Network, or VPN. These services mask your IP address when browsing, hiding important personal details. But VPNs can also be used for a myriad of other reasons – bypassing geoblocks, gaining access to restricted content, and torrenting freely.

Today, our tech experts have chosen two providers for our VPN comparison—NordVPN and PrivateVPN. Our team tested both companies, grading them on a number of key aspects such as performance, security, customer service, and more. Read our analysis below for more information and our thoughts on each of the brands.

How We Compare VPN Services

To offer the best NordVPN vs PrivateVPN services comparison, our experts measure services on a series of major components including performance, pricing, security, and several features the top providers in the field offer.

Performance

One key metric to compare VPN services is how well they let users access multiple server locations across the globe. NordVPN stands out with over 2,600 servers in 56 countries and provides access for up to 6 devices simultaneously. Users can download apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Chrome and Linux.

PrivateVPN, on the other hand, falls behind with over 80 servers in 56 countries. By comparison, the company hosts apps for Mac, iOS, Android, and Windows, Linux and smart TV’s, alongside 6 simultaneous connections.

We were happy to see both companies offer unlimited bandwidth for users.

Features

Available Streaming Services. Access to geo-restricted streaming platforms such as Netflix is one of the biggest benefits VPNs provide. We were happy to find that both services deliver access to the service, as well as other applications including BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.

Mobile Apps. It’s important to also secure your phone and mobile devices when connecting to unsecured public networks, as these devices tend to have troves of sensitive data. In this case, each VPN service hosts strong applications designed to protect iOS and Android devices.

Protocols. The way a VPN encrypts your connection determines how fast and secure it will be. Providers emphasize different advantages for diverse needs. NordVPN offers the popular OpenVPN as well as IPSec and other security-oriented protocols whereas PrivateVPN keeps the competition close with several protocols available, including OpenVPN.

Zero-Log Policy. Both brands have a strict zero-log policy, so they do not track any user data while on their service. This is essential when trying to protect users’ privacy from governments and hackers.

Speed. Speed is a crucial consideration, as VPNs can sometimes slow down an internet connection. Both NordVPN and PrivateVPN only minimally reduced download connection speeds while we tested them (please see our test speeds on NordVPN review and PrivateVPN review).

Kill Switch. Secure connections are not perfect yet, and they may sometimes fail. A kill switch lets users instantly disconnect if their connection becomes unsecured. Each VPN solution provides this feature, helping improve the overall security of these services.

Flexible Plans and Money Back. A major selling point for any VPN is financial flexibility when purchasing a plan. PrivateVPN focuses on shorter-term plans, with three different subscriptions tiers. NordVPN is ideal for customers looking for a longer-term VPN, and they also provide three different plans. Both providers will offer you the chance to test the service for 30 days, after which you are guaranteed a full refund if you decide not to engage in a longer term contract.

Security and Privacy

VPNs are primarily geared towards protecting users’ connections to the web. This includes making them anonymous and offering controls for their privacy. Both services use of multiple protocols is a plus for tech-savvy users seeking added customizability. We were happy to see that NordVPN and PrivateVPN implement kill switches and commit to not storing user data, as mentioned above. NordVPN takes this category, though, because it is based in Panama, which is famously conscious about user data privacy.

Customer Service

It’s important to have access to timely support in an emergency, or even to answer questions for optimization. PrivateVPN’s customer support team is available via e-form or through a live chat directly on their website. NordVPN’s representatives can be reached via email, regular mail, e-form, or a live chat feature. Both companies provide support 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and are quick and helpful. However, NordVPN takes this category thanks to a greater variety of options for reaching the company.

Pricing

The last component is a VPNs price comparison, a key consideration for many users. NordVPN offers a 1-year plan for $6.99 a month, and 2-year plan for $3.99 a month. A single month costs $11.95. To round out its value-added offerings, a 30-day money-back guarantee comes included in the purchase price.

Private VPN also offers three plans, including a monthly one for $8.21 and a 3-month subscription for $5.63 per month. They also provide a 1-year special promotion ($3.60 per month for an annual subscription with an additional 3 months free at the time of writing), which includes one free extra month. In addition to the prices, the service is accompanied by 30-day money-back guarantee.

We Have Ourselves a Tie

Despite a heated competition, both services arrived at a hard-fought draw in our VPN service comparison. NordVPN is an excellent solution for those web surfers looking for a long-term plan with exceptional customizability and excellent speeds. They also provide great security and a clean interface. PrivateVPN is an excellent easy-to-use VPN with multiple protocol options and security alongside more flexible short-term plans. NordVPN looks great, but will it work well in Australia?

Thanks for reading! Generally speaking, most VPNs are designed to work the same way regardless of where you’re physically located. Their main job is to mask your internet traffic to make it appear as if you’re connecting from elsewhere. We also have a list of top recommended VPNs specifically for Australia that you can check out before making your final decision. Let us know which provider you select and how the service works for you!

Amazing! This was incredibly informative and really very helpful to me. Both of these providers offer an elite service and I’ve been struggling to decide for a while. Very impressed with the depth of your review 🙂

Thanks for the information. I’ll have to compare these services against at least a third company to really be confident in my choice!

So I was just looking at the plans for PrivateVPN, and wondering there is any change in the service based on the plans? Like, do they reserve certain features as a benefit for a long-term subscription or will you get the same thing no matter what?

ST Editor says:

Hi, and thank you for the question! Generally, the only difference in service is between a company’s free trial and their paid services. Once you have chosen a paid subscription, however, all plans offer the same features, with the only difference being how long you’re covered for, and usually your price per month.
