Quibi: What to Expect with This Upcoming Streaming Service

Publish date April 13, 2020 Comments: 0
The latest contender in the streaming wars is taking a smartphone-only approach to entertainment, producing eight to 10-minute episodes subscribers can enjoy anywhere, at any time.

Quibi has its work cut out for it as the streaming arena becomes increasingly crowded. Disney Plus finally launched in Europe last month, HBO will be launching its new streaming service, Max, next month and NBC’s Peacock launch is set for 15th July.

Will Quibi’s innovative approach set it apart from its rivals or leave it floundering in a world dominated by popular reruns and hour-long episodes? More importantly, how do you get access to Quibi if you’re not in the US?

Quibi launched in the US on 6th April and will roll out to Canada and other select countries in due course. In the meantime, anyone wanting to catch a “quick bite” of the new streaming service will need a VPN to do so.

What Can We Expect From Quibi?

This mobile-only streaming service is backed by big money and big names. While Martin Scorsese may be begging fans not to watch his movie, The Irishman, on a mobile phone, it would seem the likes of Stephen Spielberg are more willing to embrace new technologies and new formats. His Quibi TV series, After Dark, will only be available for viewing after dark and represents just one of the many star-studded contributions available on the upcoming streaming service.

Big names like Liam Hemsworth, Reese Witherspoon, Idris Elba, and Zac Efron litter Quibi’s line-up, promising great things from a little app. The brains behind the streaming service, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, are confident it’s going to work.

Extensive market analysis backs up that hunch, indicating that those in the 25-35-year-old age category watch around an hour of videos online each day. The Quibi streaming service is designed to slot into this same market, providing movies presented in short chapters, documentaries, unscripted series, alongside six-minute news segments and weekend sport.

Users can enjoy Quibi TV for free for 90 days, after which a subscription costs $4.99 per month with advertising or $7.99 for an ad-free service. This is certainly cheaper than many of the alternatives, with Netflix coming in at $12.99 per month, and Disney Plus $6.99, but is that enough of a discount to engage viewers on a small screen rather than giving them free rein as other streaming services do?

Quibi TV Launches – But Only in the US

Quibi launched on 6th April but is only available in the US and Canada. Plans are afoot to offer the service further afield, but additional launch dates have yet to be confirmed. In the meantime, only those in the US or able to fake their IP addresses and fool the service into believing they’re in the US will be able to get the first glimpses of the new Quibi streaming concept.

The easiest way to navigate your way around geographical restrictions limiting Quibi streaming to US viewers is with a VPN. While some VPNs have unreliable connections or slow download speeds, others have dubious privacy policies or store logs of everything you do online. Still others have limited servers, and therefore limited IP addresses, making it more difficult to consistently find a way around sophisticated geo-blocks.

If you’re looking for a VPN that will allow you to enjoy the juicy titbits available with Quibi TV, you’ll need one with the following features:

  • Military-grade encryption to prevent bandwidth throttling and protect your online privacy
  • A large network with plenty of US servers to ensure consistent connections
  • High-speed connections and secure servers
  • Ability to bypass geographical restrictions
  • Strict no-logging policy and commitment to user privacy

Bearing those requirements in mind, we’ve come up with a list of the six best Quibi VPNs that will ensure you get the most out of your initial 90-day free trial, even if you decide to dump the streaming service after that.

The Best Quibi VPNs

#1 ExpressVPN

Fast, consistent, transparent, and driven by the latest technology, ExpressVPN offers users everything they could want from a VPN, including both speed and security. A network of over 3,000 servers will keep users connected anywhere in the world, while zero-knowledge DNS and a proven policy of no logging, makes it one of the best VPNs around.

While some VPN providers have more servers, none have servers in as many different locations or countries as ExpressVPN, giving users the benefit of worldwide coverage. Furthermore, while other VPNs have had intermittent success getting around geographical restrictions on other streaming platforms, like Netflix for instance, ExpressVPN has proven 100% dependable.

It’s still early days and there’s every chance that Quibi will apply technological advancements to its geo-blocks, the same way as it has embraced new techniques that allow users to rotate their phone while watching a show. The likelihood is, however, that ExpressVPN will find a way in regardless.

When it comes to consistency and dependability, ExpressVPN is tough to beat. When it comes to speed and security, it’s even tougher, so it’s hardly surprising it wins our vote for the best Quibi VPN, even if it hasn’t had the chance to prove its mettle just yet.

#2 NordVPN

With a gargantuan server network encompassing 5,860 servers in 59 countries, NordVPN can bypass the most sophisticated geo-blocks, giving users access to regional content and restricted streaming services like Quibi TV. It doesn’t always achieve the lightning-fast connections that ExpressVPN can claim, but it is both consistent and exceptionally secure.

NordVPN operates out of Panama where there are few legal obligations in terms of data retention, allowing it to operate under a strict no-logging policy. With nearly 1,800 servers in the US alone, NordVPN is one of the best VPNs for streaming US TV from overseas and has proven consistently capable of bypassing restrictions on streaming sites like Disney Plus and HBO.

To make up for its occasionally sluggish connection speeds, NordVPN has a wealth of advanced features on offer, including its obfuscated servers which are designed to help those in heavily censored regions disguise their encrypted traffic, making it look more like normal data. It also offers split-tunneling and has a built-in ad blocker and kill switch.

NordVPN’s cost-effective long-term subscriptions available and outstanding customer support, along with additional security benefits of Onion over VPN, make it liable to become the best Quibi VPN over time.

#3 CyberGhost

Another behemoth of a VPN, CyberGhost has expanded its server network even further over the past year and now has over 5,900 servers in 89 countries.

CyberGhost is one of the easiest VPNs to set up and makes streaming activities child’s play with its preconfigured streaming profiles. While it probably hasn’t added Quibi TV to its streaming profiles yet, setting one up takes just a couple of minutes.

Like the other VPNs in the running for the title of the best Quibi VPN, CyberGhost has selected a privacy-friendly location for its headquarters. Operating out of Romania gives CyberGhost the freedom to operate under a strict no-logging policy

Not only is CyberGhost user friendly, but it’s also surprisingly affordable, especially for those willing to make a long-term commitment. It also remains one of the only reputable VPNs offering a free trial, even though it’s only for 24 hours.

CyberGhost is more generous than most when it comes to simultaneous connections and allows users to connect up to seven devices at any one time – more than either ExpressVPN or NordVPN, both of which restrict users to six.

If CyberGhost’s inviting interface and user-friendly device appeals as much as Quibi TV, sign up with CyberGhost today and enjoy your 24-hour free test drive. Alternatively, find out more about what makes this VPN tick by checking out our full review here.

#4 Surfshark

The first of our best Quibi VPNs to have a more limited server network, Surfshark’s 1040-odd servers provide surprisingly fast and reliable connections, despite being restricted to just 61 countries.

Surfshark is a relative newcomer to the world of cybersecurity but neither this nor its limited network seem to have much impact on its ability to bypass geographical restrictions. Even when the likes of NordVPN were battling to access Disney Plus, Surfshark quickly found a way around the geo-blocks, as it promises to do again with the Quibi streaming service.

Based in the British Virgin Islands where there are few data retention laws, Surfshark operates a strict no-logging policy and while being one of the cheapest VPNs utilizing the latest AES 256-bit encryption to keep traffic hidden from prying eyes.

Surfshark is almost unique in that it allows for unlimited simultaneous connections so you, and whoever you’re in lockdown with, can all stream the same 10-minute snippet of magic at the same time on different devices, all of which are protected by Surfshark’s all-encompassing digital umbrella.

To some extent, Surfshark has modeled its VPN service on NordVPN and, as a result, also includes advanced features like Double VPN, which Surfshark calls MultiHop, split tunneling, and an adblocker.

#5 ProtonVPN

With this VPN provider, you could watch the Quibi streaming service for free! By combining ProtonVPN’s limited free VPN service with Quibi TV’s 90-day free trial, you could get three months’ worth of Quibi snippets without paying a cent.

ProtonVPN is, like Surfshark, comparatively small, with just 767 servers in 46 countries. Furthermore, as a free user, you can only access three servers, although, as one of these is situated in the US, it should be enough to get you into Quibi.

ProtonVPN has an impeccable track record when it comes to bypassing geographical restrictions, having consistently accessed US Netflix and Disney Plus when many others couldn’t, so chances are it will prove itself to be one of the best Quibi VPNs despite its size.

Although free users are limited to just one device, those opting for the highly affordable plus plan can use up to five simultaneous connections, while getting the additional benefits of and secure streaming.

Unfortunately, ProtonVPN apps for iOS and Android do not officially support streaming at the moment so secure streaming won’t do you much good with Quibi, although it could stop your ISP from throttling your Netflix streams.

Quibi Streaming: Concept vs Reality

Authors like James Patterson are known for their so-called “potato chip” chapters and Quibi TV intends to do the same with movies, series, and documentaries. For short attention spans, and for those whose work-life balance is more work than balance, nothing could be better.

When Katzenberg and his co-founder, Meg Whitman, first started talking about Quibi streaming on smartphones, they pitched it as “an on-the-go diversion for anyone standing in line at Starbucks or riding the subway”.

Since the coronavirus pandemic began, however, they’ve had to reconsider their stance and their audience. Instead of focusing on career-driven 25 to 35-year-olds, Whitman is now saying, “People who are home with their children would really like a 10-minute break”.

Some believe Quibi TV couldn’t have launched at a better time as shelter-in-place orders have swept across the world, causing a massive upsurge in streaming compared to March last year.

Although those figures are positive, Quibi streaming will now have to take on established services like Amazon Prime and Netflix, while being confined to smartphones. Netflix and similar services work on a wider range of devices than Quibi TV, which could be a problem now that most potential customers are stuck at home.

As social distancing pushes us apart physically, the desire to come together over shared experiences increases and the fact that Quibi TV is designed purely for smartphones could work against it. Afterall how many of us are going to squeeze around a smartphone to get our evening’s entertainment when we could be watching on a smart TV?

Conclusion

That this new approach to streaming is original is undeniable but “whether Quibi will turn out to be the next Netflix, an economic and creative game-changer in the entertainment landscape, or the latest version of fads such as Smell-O-Vision and 3-D, is an open question”.

There is, at present, a captive audience but whether Quibi can keep them engaged once the shelter-in-place orders are relinquished and its 90-day free trial comes to an end remains to be seen.

Quibi is gunning for a piece of a heavily contested pie and, while a few quick bites might be enough to see subscribers jump on the bandwagon now, just how long can that piece of pie last, especially with Netflix still stubbornly hogging around 85% of that same pie?

Whatever the outcome, for those not currently sheltering in place in the US or Canada, the best Quibi VPN is, in our opinion, the fast and fabulous ExpressVPN so, if you want to see what all the fuss is about, get ExpressVPN and sign up for the latest Quibi streaming experience.
