Hulu is one of the most popular web streaming services, after Netflix. Unfortunately, it’s only available in the US and Japan, much to the frustration of many foreign viewers. But: by using a VPN service you can effortlessly bypass the Hulu geo-blocks. We recommend ExpressVPN for its high-speeds and unlimited bandwidth. Read on to find out more about the best VPN for Hulu!

Our pick for Best VPN for Hulu: ExpressVPN

Best VPN to Unblock Hulu

Hulu was founded in 2008 as part of a joint venture with the NBC Network. Initially, Hulu offered limited web streaming for several cable and premium networks. The company quickly formed partnerships with major TV Networks, including, BBC, ABC, Fox, and Showtime.

Although it offers fewer shows than Netflix, and it has less original content, Hulu tends to offer TV shows within 24 hours of their being broadcast on cable television, which is significantly faster.

Hulu’s niche and a key factor in its success is its art-house/anime series selection. The streaming services offers over 50 anime streaming titles, such as One Punch Man, Cowboy Bebop, and Ranma ½. With its ease of use and variety of content, Hulu is still a firmly established and popular streaming service.

Initially, Hulu was a free service which relied on advertising for its revenue. However, since 2010 Hulu is a paid subscription service and the basic plan starts at $7.99 per month. Currently, Hulu has approximately 50 million subscribers and it currently earns around $500M in yearly revenue. However, Hulu is restricted to the US and Japan only, and doesn’t offer any service outside of these locations.

If you’re a Hulu subscriber visiting a foreign country or you decide to immigrate outside of the US, you will no longer be able to access Hulu’s magnificent content selection, unless of course, you use a VPN.

How to Get Hulu Unblocked with a VPN

By using a VPN you can watch Hulu anywhere. A VPN, or virtual private network, is a secure remote network that you connect to using your regular home network. Once connected, you will be able to access the web via the VPN which can mask your true location and provide a more secure connection. A VPN can ‘geo-spoof’ your location, i.e. make it appear as though you are connecting from a different location than the one you’re actually in. By doing so, you can freely watch Hulu in the UK, or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

In addition, since the VPN offers a fully secure, encrypted connection, your true identity will remain hidden and untraceable, so you needn’t worry about potential repercussions.

Hulu VPN Ban, and the Hulu VPN Block Workaround

If you want to watch Hulu abroad, then a VPN is by far your best option, however, not every VPN will suffice. In recent years, Hulu has wised up to the fact that many of its users are illicitly accessing the site from restricted locations and they’ve implemented firewalls to prevent VPNs from connecting. However, there are still certain VPN providers who have successfully implemented a Hulu VPN block workaround into their network which can bypass the Hulu VPN ban.

To Unblock Hulu with a VPN, follow these 3 easy steps:

  1. Select a reliable VPN and download onto your operating system (iOS, Windows, etc.)
  2. Change your location to one in the US.
  3. Sign into Hulu and watch Hulu HD without throttling.

Get Hulu Live TV Streaming Anywhere

Many cord cutters are not just signing up for Hulu, they are signing up for Hulu with Live TV. Significantly cheaper than many cable services across the United States, it’s $39.99 per month + $7.99 for on-demand services is a great investment with no additional fees. Aside from getting all the major networks – CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox), users also enjoy a wide range of sports channels as well as entertainment and lifestyle channels, including Food Network and Bravo. It works on all major devices, including:

  • Xbox One and Xbox 360
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Roku
  • Chromecast
  • Apple TV 4
  • iOS and Android devices

Current cable packages come with hundreds of needless channels, that you are paying for regardless of how much you watch them. You also get long commercial breaks. Hulu Live TV cuts them all out. Plus, the customer service is a lot better. (Added bonus!) If you live out of the US, unfortunately you don’t have access. But with a VPN you can unblock Hulu Live TV channels and watch all your favorite shows.

How to Disable IPv6

Not everything works 100% of the time – and VPNs are the same. Just because you have a VPN that is able to access Hulu, doesn’t mean you won’t get a message to shut off your “anonymous proxy.” Why? IPv6 leaks. What is this? Well, simply put when you use a VPN, it will reroute traffic via its DNS servers and hide your IPv4 address, BUT it won’t hide your IPv6 address.

Have no fear because there IS a workaround for this. Here’s how you can do it.

Mac OSX:

  • Disconnect from the VPN and close the window
  • Open the Apple menu
  • Choose System Preferences >> Network >> AirPort >> Advanced
  • Click TCP/IP
  • Click on Configure IPv6 pop-up menu; select Off
  • Click OK and Apply
  • Open up your VPN, refresh Hulu, and start watching!

Windows 10:

  • Disconnect from the VPN and close the window
  • Hold down the Windows key and press the R-key
  • Type cpl and hit Enter to open Network Connections
  • Find the connection you are using, right click, and select Properties
  • Click Networking or General tab and uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)”
  • Click OK and close the window
  • Hold down the Windows key and press the R-key, then select Command Prompt (Admin), hit Yes when asked if it’s okay for the program to make changes to your computer
  • In the command prompt (black window), type ipconfig /flushdns, press Enter
  • Open up your VPN, refresh Hulu, and start watching!

Watch Hulu Outside of the US or Anywhere

The battle between web-streaming services and VPN providers is heating up so it’s important to stay ahead of the curve. The best VPN services that we recommend regularly update their software to ensure that users can access web-streaming sites via their networks. If, like millions of other Americans, you’re a Hulu subscriber and enjoy their fantastic content, you don’t want to be left stranded if you go abroad either temporarily or permanently. Subscribe to one of our recommended VPNs today and you can be sure you won’t miss out.

Hulu’s VPN ban is even more advanced than Netflix’s firewall. ExpressVPN successfully encrypts all the internet traffic heading to and from the computer of the user and routes it through a server in a location of the users’ choice. This can make it appear to Hulu as though the user is located in the United States, which gives the user access to all the shows.
ExpressVPN connections are extremely stable and bandwidth is more than enough to stream Hulu shows in top quality. Several server locations are available across the United States. This VPN is surely a reliable one for regular users of Hulu.

Hi, I have a question. How do VPNs work concerning use on different devices? If I download it on my laptop to watch Hulu, can I also use it on my Android phone to watch via the Hulu app when I am commuting to work?

Hi, and thanks for the question! Most VPNs with paid subscriptions let users connect more than one device to the same subscription simultaneously. This means that if you’ve already installed a VPN on your computer, you could also download the same VPN client for your phone, and still be able to watch Hulu on both devices simultaneously. In some cases, you may have to pay for an additional subscription if you connect more than the alloted number of devices you’re allowed, but that isn’t a very common problem in most households, unless you have more than 5 or 6 devices attempting to use the same VPN at the same time.

Ok, I can tell the person that reviewed these services knows a thing or two, because the IPv6 leak has happened to me on multiple different services. SaferVPN support walked me through fixing the problem when Hulu pegged me for using them.

Anyone else reading this not on Windows 10, call tech support and get the instructions to fix the leak. It will probably resolve most of your problems using Hulu.

I’ve used VPN Unlimited and currently use Nord VPN and I’d recommend Nord. About a week ago was the first time I’d ever seen them drop a server and once I reconnected, I was back live in less than a minute.

I think NordVPN is the best VPN to watch Hulu. A lot of people are complaining and I think it’s probably due to a wrong VPN. Try Nord!

The network of HideMyAss offers comprehensive and very high-performance coverage. Though it can be pretty frustrating sometimes, it still manages to do the trick for me. Not entirely a bad choice.

If you’re looking to watch Hulu, forget IPVanish, it hasn’t work with Hulu for quite some time now. It appears that Hulu has blocked all of IPVanish server list so it doesn’t matter which server you pick, you’ll get a message from Hulu saying that you’re behind a proxy server and that Hulu is not available from outside the United States. IPVanish for it’s part, has been notified of this issue, but hasn’t solved it to date.

The trouble is though, they apparently can´t accept a payment from a bank account that is not US. So there is no way to subscribe anyway :-/

      Hey Victoria,

How odd. Unfortunately I can’t speak with certainty as to which credit cards they’ll accept. I’d recommend contacting them directly about it. They’re usually very quick about getting back to you.

      Hope this helps!

This article seems to be out of date even though it was written recently. I can’t access Hulu at all with my Express VPN, it still recognizes that I’m not in the U.S. 🙁
