How to Watch Hulu Outside America
Hulu is a great streaming service that offers top quality content along with a whole host of other advantages, like being cheaper than many cable services in the US. However, many users are frustrated that they can’t access their online streaming service abroad.
Here we look at a Hulu location trick that will help you view their catalog anywhere in the world.
Without a doubt, our VPN is ExpressVPN for its high-speeds and unlimited bandwidth. Read on to find out more about the best VPN for Hulu!
How to Access Hulu From Abroad
Hulu first started as a free streaming service which saw its popularity soar. It was able to make a certain amount of revenue from advertising but eventually moved to a subscription-based business model, only available to the US and Japan.
Because of this, a VPN is needed to bypass geo blocking and geo restrictions on Hulu content. These restrictions, even if you are a paying subscriber, will block you from trying to access Hulu elsewhere in the world.
Accessing a VPN is a method of hiding your IP address. It works by hiding the original address behind another one that is attached to a server owned by your VPN provider. As an IP address is how Hulu determines your worldwide location, by giving you a new one, you also have a new location in the eyes of Hulu.
An additional upside to a VPN is that it also provides a more secure way of browsing the internet so you are safe from hackers and prying eyes.

How to Choose a Hulu VPN
While a VPN is by far the best solution to accessing geo blocked content from Hulu when abroad, Hulu itself has become aware of a few VPN providers. This means that not all VPN providers are suitable if you are wondering how to unblock Hulu.
But not to worry! There is still a group of VPN providers who have managed to implement a Hulu VPN block workaround into their server network.
We have examined these VPN providers which can still get around Hulu’s restrictions, and rated them based on the following characteristics:
- Connection Speed – a fast connection speed is a necessity for a VPN provider. Without it, it is almost pointless using a VPN in the first place. When using a VPN with slow speeds, your Hulu streaming session will be prone to buffering.
- Server locations – many servers are needed in both the US and Japan to provide users with the ability to access Hulu’s geo restricted content.
- Privacy – users will want to use the best VPN for Hulu which means that their privacy is paramount to their provider. This will often mean a no log policy where providers don’t keep a record of their customers’ online activities.
- Security – we all want to use the internet safely without fear of being attacked by viruses or hackers. The best VPN providers will have stringent security protocols in place to allow for peaceful streaming.
- Price – VPNs can be a fantastic application to download and use, but they have to provide value for money. We only list providers who offer a good service for a fair price.
How To Disable IPv6
While VPNs do hide your IP address, they only hide your IPv4 address and not your IPv6 address. This slight technicality is a way that Hulu, and other streaming services, manage to stop VPN users some of the time.
There is a simple workaround, however, which is outlined below:
- Disconnect from the VPN and close the window
- Open the Apple menu
- Choose System Preferences >> Network >> AirPort >> Advanced
- Click TCP/IP
- Click on Configure IPv6 pop-up menu; select Off
- Click OK and Apply
- Open up your VPN, refresh Hulu, and start watching!
- Disconnect from the VPN and close the window
- Hold down the Windows key and press the R-key
- Type cpl and hit Enter to open Network Connections
- Find the connection you are using, right-click, and select Properties
- Click Networking or General tab and uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)”
- Click OK and close the window
- Hold down the Windows key and press the R-key, then select Command Prompt (Admin), hit Yes when asked if the program can make changes to your computer
- In the command prompt (a black window), type ipconfig /flushdns, press Enter
- Open up your VPN, refresh Hulu, and start watching!
Bottom Line
By subscribing to a VPN, through one of our recommended providers, you can rest assured that you can access Hulu’s content wherever you are the world.
ExpressVPN remains our favorite for Hulu streaming due to the high quality service that it consistently offers.
While Hulu and other video streaming services are always trying to stop users accessing content through the use of a VPN, providers are constantly updating their software to ensure trouble-free content viewing.
how do you watch Hulu Live TV with VPN?
Hi Bill,
Simply subscribe and download one of our top VPNs listed in the article above. Then, you can connect to a server located in the USA or UK (wherever you would like to have your Hulu library be). Once you are connected, you can refresh your screen and you will be able to view Hulu’s content as if you were in the USA>
How do you get around setting up your “Home Network” on Hulu?
Hi Sin,
You can set up your “home network” from the US. Then, use your VPN to jump to a US IP address, and the service will see you as being located within the United States.
Hi, anyone manage to watch Hulu with Live TV in Europe? Hulu works perfectly with Express Vpn but Live TV doesn’t?
Regards
Hi! Thanks for participating in the conversation! ExpressVPN does indeed work for Hulu. We’ve had success connecting to Live TV on several of the company’s servers, but these may not always work, or may be taken down every once in a while. If you’re encountering difficulties, we’d recommend attempting to connect with a different server. If that doesn’t work, you should contact ExpressVPN’s great customer service which can help you find a better solution. Let us know how it goes!
I use ExpressVPN and the IPv6 workaround worked for a little bit and now it’s showing me the anonymous proxy message and not letting me stream Hulu. I’ve tried resetting the IPv6 and restarting my computer. What else can I try?
Hello, we can understand that it may be quite frustrating. Aside from contacting their great customer support, ExpressVPN does offer this quick guide which can give you a few different ways to get your Hulu service back up and running. Mostly they involve tweaking your DNS settings to make sure your VPN isn’t leaking your IP address. Moreover, IPv6 isn’t always recognized by some websites, which may be why you’re having difficulties. In the worst of cases, you could try one of the other great VPN services we listed here and try them with your Hulu account. In either case, let us know which solution worked for you!
Hulu’s VPN ban is even more advanced than Netflix’s firewall. ExpressVPN successfully encrypts all the internet traffic heading to and from the computer of the user and routes it through a server in a location of the users’ choice. This can make it appear to Hulu as though the user is located in the United States, which gives the user access to all the shows.
ExpressVPN connections are extremely stable and bandwidth is more than enough to stream Hulu shows in top quality. Several server locations are available across the United States. This VPN is surely a reliable one for regular users of Hulu.
Hi, I have a question. How do VPNs work concerning use on different devices? If I download it on my laptop to watch Hulu, can I also use it on my Android phone to watch via the Hulu app when I am commuting to work?
Hi, and thanks for the question! Most VPNs with paid subscriptions let users connect more than one device to the same subscription simultaneously. This means that if you’ve already installed a VPN on your computer, you could also download the same VPN client for your phone, and still be able to watch Hulu on both devices simultaneously. In some cases, you may have to pay for an additional subscription if you connect more than the alloted number of devices you’re allowed, but that isn’t a very common problem in most households, unless you have more than 5 or 6 devices attempting to use the same VPN at the same time.
Ok, I can tell the person that reviewed these services knows a thing or two, because the IPv6 leak has happened to me on multiple different services. SaferVPN support walked me through fixing the problem when Hulu pegged me for using them.
Anyone else reading this not on Windows 10, call tech support and get the instructions to fix the leak. It will probably resolve most of your problems using Hulu.
Hulu is same as the Netflix means both are video streaming network .So you can use any one of the above vpn for accessing Hulu outside the US and JAPAN
I’ve used VPN Unlimited and currently use Nord VPN and I’d recommend Nord. About a week ago was the first time I’d ever seen them drop a server and once I reconnected, I was back live in less than a minute.
Hulu is one of the best streaming services you can find online. When in countries where access to Hulu is restricted, I use Nord vpn. Works like a charm
Hey ST, really loving ExpressVPN! Thanks for recommending customer support. I was having a problem connecting but they were super helpful and now I’ve got Hulu during semester abroad in Europe. Thanks!
I wanted to watch “Death Note”, an anime series on Hulu but it said, “You are not allowed to watch it, region not listed”. Please, I need to know if I can access their site using Express VPN or not? Do I need a different VPN?
Hi, and we’re sorry to hear you’ve had some problems! We still recommend ExpressVPN as our top option for streaming Netflix US worldwide, but we’re aware that Netflix has been aggressively blocking access to VPNs. However, if you can’t connect using one server location, you can try a few different options before paying for another VPN service. If your problem persists, we recommend contacting the company’s customer support, which can happily help you access your series quickly! Let us know how this works out for you!
Hurray! I can now watch Hulu anywhere using VPN. I make use of ExpressVPN. Please, is there any other VPN that is in anyway better than Express?
Hi, i am from chennai- india, i have also tried few vpn but none helped except NORD VPN. it woks for me i just signed up for 3 days free trial you guys better try it.
I think NordVPN is the best VPN to watch Hulu. A lot of people are complaining and I think it’s probably due to a wrong VPN. Try Nord!
Been trying to access Hulu for a while now since I moved to Europe. Definitely going to try these
The network of HideMyAss offers comprehensive and very high-performance coverage. Though it can be pretty frustrating sometimes, it still manages to do the trick for me. Not entirely a bad choice.

If you’re looking to watch Hulu, forget IPVanish, it hasn’t work with Hulu for quite some time now. It appears that Hulu has blocked all of IPVanish server list so it doesn’t matter which server you pick, you’ll get a message from Hulu saying that you’re behind a proxy server and that Hulu is not available from outside the United States. IPVanish for it’s part, has been notified of this issue, but hasn’t solved it to date.
The trouble is though, they apparently can´t accept a payment from a bank account that is not US. So there is no way to subscribe anyway :-/
Hey Jana,
ExpresssVPN also accepts other payment options, including PayPal and Bitcoin. There is likely one that you can use. What were you trying previously?
Best,
Lyndon
Didn’t work for me. I tried expressvpn and ipvanish. Still can’t use Hulu.
Dear Shelly,
Sorry to hear about your troubles with this, it appears to be that its a constant struggle back and forth between streaming service providers and VPN services.
Best,
Lyndon
Express works for me.. However, I can’t pay with my canadian credit card?
Hey Victoria,
How odd. Unfortunately I can’t speak with certainty as to which credit cards they’ll accept. I’d recommend contacting them directly about it. They’re usually very quick about getting back to you.

Hope this helps!
Best,
Lyndon
This article seems to be out of date even though it was written recently. I can’t access Hulu at all with my Express VPN, it still recognizes that I’m not in the U.S. 🙁
Hey Sarah – sorry to hear you are having trouble accessing Hulu!
It seems that Hulu has tried to block VPN users, but there are a few ways to work around this.
