When it comes down to choosing the best VPN, it’s perfectly normal to be twiddling your thumbs. Since you’ve narrowed your choice down to two excellent providers, it’s not surprising you’re having trouble choosing between NordVPN and IPVanish. Our tech experts have done the hard work for you by testing both brands and comparing them down to a T on a number of factors. Read on to find out the pros and cons of both providers so you can come to a decision and get onto the real fun stuff (that is, private browsing of course).

Performance

Both NordVPN and IPVanish are neck and neck when it comes to device compatibility with both providers supporting almost all Operating Systems including, iOS, Linux, Mac, Windows, Android and even smart TVs.

NordVPN is an absolute server beast when it comes to number of servers and locations. With 1,100 servers across 61 countries, users are spoilt for choice as it towers over IPVanish. IPVanish still has a very impressive 850 servers, but NordVPN beats IPVanish by one in terms of country locations.

As top ranked VPN providers, both offer unlimited bandwidth allowing for maximum browsing and streaming speed. On top of that NordVPN can use up to six simultaneous connections on different devices with IPVanish falling one short of that, allowing for up to five connections at once. Being able to connect so many devices at once, makes both of these VPNs perfect for those with many devices, large families, or even those who want to share accounts with friends (depending on the generosity of friends, of course!).

It’s an unavoidable fact that every VPN will “eat” some of your internet speed. After all, strong encryption doesn’t come easy and is inevitably going to consume resources, in turn affecting speed. Both NordVPN and IPVanish take only little nibbles of speed and are some of the fastest we’ve ever tested. When tested, NordVPN suffered an average of a 5% speed loss and IPVanish incurred an impressive 3% loss overall, but IPVanish tests are not as consistent as Nord’s. It should also be noted that, as with all VPNs, you may experience the odd lag particularly when streaming shows online, this lag time can be reduced by choosing servers that are closer to the country you are located.

Features – NordVPN vs IPVanish

Available Streaming Services: Both NordVPN including Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime and Hulu to name a few. IPVanish will provide excellent streaming quality on BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime and Hulu, but will not unblock Netflix based on the last check we’ve made.

Mobile Apps: Both NordVPN and IPVanish have attractive and easy to use apps for both Android and iOS, but IPVanish has run into some issues with its Mac OS application (contact customer support and they should be able to fix any issues).

Protocols: IPVanish offers 256-bit AES encryption, OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP/IPSec protocols. NordVPN also offers 256-bit AES encryption, OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, but on top of that also has SSTP and IKEv2/Ipsec.

Server Switching. Both VPNs offer unlimited server switching so if one server is performing poorly you can switch to your hearts content.

Extra Tools: IPVanish includes a free Nat Firewall and the ability to block Lan traffic which makes it possible to control when your computer is connected to the internet. NordVPN goes above and beyond with its added features. It’s notorious for updating software on a regular basis and their tools show it. It offers double VPN encryption to increase anonymity, and have a tool called CyberSec that protects against malware, ads and bots. When it comes to extra tools and added privacy, NordVPN certainly takes the biscuit.

Security and Privacy

Both NordVPN and IPVanish come with top of the pack security levels offering military grade 256-bit AES encryption (for more on specific protocols, see above). Both VPNs also offer kill switches and DNS Leak Prevention with a very strict no-logs policy. It is hard to come by a truly no log VPN nowadays with most VPNs claiming they have it, but then mentioning in the small print that it isn’t quite ‘no-log’ and that they hold onto logs for a month or so. We are happy to say that isn’t the case with NordVPN and IPVanish. You can be sure that with both of these VPNs, there is no way that anyone is getting their hands on your logs.

IPVanish vs NordVPN in terms of security is a tough call to make. NordVPN has a slight security advantage due to its numerous added tools (again see above) and the fact that it is located in a good jurisdiction for privacy; Panama. IPVanish on the other hand has its headquarters in the USA where the government is notorious for sticking their nose where it doesn’t belong. Both VPNs also offer anonymous torrenting with high speeds, making them ideal providers for those who are avid media downloaders from torrents. Both also support VPN over TOR, as they are log-less. Overall, we’d have to say that NordVPN has the upper hand when it comes to security.

Customer Service

NordVPN offers email support and 24/7 Live Chat Support that we thought was mediocre. We found their livechat to not always be as ‘live’ as it should be, taking a few minutes sometimes between replies, though overall the content of the support itself was very helpful. On the other hand, IPVanish surprisingly only offers email support which was friendly and not too shabby, but we’d like to see more forms of customer support for both VPNs; being able to phone a real human being is nice every now again.

NordVPN works out a little more expensive if you pay for just one month, but all of its other plans work out cheaper than IPVanish. We are particularly impressed with the very low price of its two year plan. And as you can see, NordVPN offers a much longer time frame for its money-back guarantee. You may be thinking that both VPNs are a little pricey, but that is the small price you pay for a top quality VPN, allowing you complete online privacy and freedom, as well as access to all your favorite geo-blocked content, of course.

Why We Prefer NordVPN over IPVanish

This review’s IPVanish vs NordVPN battle was a real close call. These ambitious providers both offer the highest privacy and security cyberly possible, with both having intriguing features and protocols. If we had to choose one, after all of our comparisons, we’d have to say that NordVPN wins by the skin of its teeth. We feel that NordVPN truly is the best option, not only are there far more servers globally, but the location of the company itself increases its security twofold. As well as that, it’s considerably cheaper if you look at its plans for over one month.
