Best VPN for Facebook in 2018

With close to 2 billion monthly users, Facebook is by far the world’s largest social media and publishing platform. Unfortunately, access to Facebook is restricted in many locations, which means tourists and residents in certain countries are missing out on the magical world of Facebook. However, there’s no need to worry as you can bypass these restrictions and unblock Facebook using a Facebook VPN.

We recommend ExpressVPN for its ease of use, total security, and fast speeds.

Best VPN for Facebook

Facebook started out in 2004 as an exclusive social media forum for Harvard students before it expanded and allow open access for anyone over 13. Since then, it has grown rapidly and now close to 2 billion people each day use Facebook. It’s estimated that 90% of adults in the US have a Facebook account and virtually every business has a Facebook page to promote its services. Its owner, Mark Zuckerberg, has been named as one of the top 10 most powerful people in the world due to Facebook’s universal appeal and popularity.

However, Facebook’s meteoric rise has not been without controversy. Facebook has been accused of infringing on its users’ privacy by keeping indefinite data records and allowing third-party websites to use plug-ins to identify each visitor and enable targeted ads. In 2010, several US-based organizations, including the ACLU, Consumer Watchdog, and the Center for Digital Democracy, sent a letter to Facebook’s Directors, demanding that they fix their privacy policies. Facebook was also involved in the NSA’s infamous PRISM program which used social media accounts to collate information about US civilians. In addition, many of Facebook’s user settings are set to public by default, meaning much of what you post is automatically visible to strangers and people whom you’d rather not be sharing information with.

Furthermore, Facebook has been accused of hosting hate speech, incitement to violence, and providing a platform for terrorists to collude and conspire. In 2016, relatives of four US nationals who were murdered by Hamas terrorists filed a $1B lawsuit against Facebook, accusing the social media juggernaut of facilitating the attack by refusing to cooperate with counter-terrorist agencies, therefore allowing the terrorists to use Facebook to incite violence and plan their attacks.

Why Can’t I Access Facebook?

As a result of all this, several countries banned Facebook outright, including China, Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan. Other countries, such as Syria, India, Malaysia, and Vietnam have sporadically blocked and then unblock Facebook, in an attempt to stop dissidents and revolutionaries from spreading their ideas. Admittedly, some of the above mentioned countries have blocked Facebook for totalitarian reasons, however, many of them have cited legitimate reasons why Facebook posed a threat to national security. Recently, the UK urged Facebook to curb online hate speech and extremist incitement on its networks and many world governments routinely monitor Facebook for these reasons.

So if you were wondering, “can I access Facebook from anywhere,” then the answer is a resounding no. Not only is Facebook heavily monitored by the company itself, government agencies are always watching, and many countries restrict access, either entirely or periodically. For better or worse, Facebook today is far from the haven of free speech and freedom of expression it originally set out to be.

Why Use a VPN for Facebook?

If you’re connecting from somewhere that won’t let you access Facebook then you’ll need to unblock Facebook with a Facebook VPN. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a secure network which you can connect to remotely via your own, home network. Once you’re connected, you’ll be accessing the internet as though you’re using the VPN, and your true identity will remain hidden. In addition, a VPN can ‘geo-spoof’ your location, i.e. fool internet servers into thinking you’re in a different location than the one you’re actually in. This can help you bypass geo-blocks and government restrictions and you can connect to Facebook from anywhere.

For example, if you’re visiting China as a tourist and want to share a picture of you on the Great Wall of China, you can either wait until you’re home and the moment has passed, or you can connect to the web with a VPN and share it instantly.

Best VPN for Facebook for 2018

To determine which is the best VPN for Facebook, we scrutinized all the top VPN providers and tested their features. The best VPNs for Facebook were the ones that met the following criteria:

  • Unlimited bandwidth and fast speeds. Using Facebook can take up a lot of bandwidth as much of the content is audio/video. These can also take some time to download so a good Facebook VPN must provide unlimited bandwidth and fast internet speeds.
  • Ultra-secure encryption. If you’d rather not have your web history and private information shared with e-commerce companies, or you don’t want the government to know you’re bypassing their Facebook censorship, you must use a secure network. A good VPN will use a strong encryption algorithm, i.e. AES 256-bit, SSL, or Triple DES, and more importantly, will allow you to communicate with Facebook friends privately and securely.
  • Multiple server locations. To access Facebook from restricted locations you need to use a foreign-based server. A reliable VPN service will host hundreds of servers in dozens of different locations.

#1 ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN provides fast network speeds as well as unlimited bandwidth. The VPN software is compatible with all devices and it even uses a special obfuscation method which hides the fact that you’re using a VPN altogether.

Communicate with Facebook Friends Privately and Securely

In addition to connecting to Facebook from restricted locations, a VPN can also enable you to use Facebook privately, without being monitored by various companies. Facebook can track your IP address and location, as well as your web usage and online activity. By using a VPN you can avoid detection and keep your identity hidden. In truth, much of Facebook’s data retention is for fairly innocuous reasons, namely, to allow e-commerce companies to send you targeted ads. However, NGOs, government agencies, and employers, are using Facebook to track individuals and monitor them online.

Access Facebook Securely From Anywhere

Bottom line – Facebook is a magnificent web tool which allows people from all over the globe to connect, share common interests, and keep in touch. If you want to access Facebook securely from anywhere, you have to use a VPN.

NordVPN checks all the boxes when it comes to a fast VPN that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and is equipped with rigid encryption standards. It’ll do its job quietly and efficiently with little to no interruption during Facebook newsfeed scrolling of the user.
NordVPN can also be categorized as a logless VPN service. User data simply isn’t stored at all. The policy has served it well in the past – authorities have sent it multiple requests for data but there wasn’t anything on internal servers that could identify users. This means it’s almost impossible for the activity of the user to be traced back because NordVPN simply refrains from storing any user data at all. Its own employees won’t be able to see what a user does on the web.

My school majors in IT and they have Facebook blocked which is quite funny because everyone uses a VPN. My question is can it be proven that we are using VPNs? Is there a way we can be found out?

Hi, and thank you for the great question! VPNs are an excellent way to mask your data traffic between your computer and your ISP, as well as the broader web. Generally when you use a VPN you are protected, though that doesn’t mean you’re completely invisible. For one, if you’ve installed your VPN on a school computer, it may give the network administrators a hint of what you’re doing. Additionally, browser histories are saved directly to the PC unless you clear them. On public networks such as schools, many IT departments have ways of finding out a specific computer’s history. However, unless they are clearly looking for it, you should be safe. Nevertheless, it’s always good to be smart, and using your own computer over the network is likely the best policy.

I am planning a trip to China. I’ll try one of them to access Facebook in China. Shall I obtain it before traveling?

Hi Pete, Thank you for your question. Because China blocks VPNs, and you need a VPN to access Facebook, it is important to download the VPN before you travel there. It will work once you are in China. A VPN is the best option to bypass the Great Firewall of China!

Thanks for the query! The security level of VPNs will change from provider to provider, as some are focused on privacy, while others emphasize better speeds. However, several VPNs are known as excellent security choices, including ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and PrivateVPN. These providers give you strong encryption, as well as a secure connection to find the information you need to see. Let us know how they work for you!

So what are the chances that FACEBOOK will ban me for using a VPN. We sign up for Facebook from our ISP address and surely they can track where we use it from. Will I get in trouble with Facebook because I am showing up on a server nowhere near where I live? Should I contact Facebook support before using it over VPN?

Thank you for the question Sally! Facebook has not been reported to ban any users for logging in with a VPN. Because so many users do access the site from different countries and locations, it would be hard to keep tabs on individual users. Moreover, it is not explicitly against the company’s Terms of Service. You can keep your connection secure even on Facebook!

Facebook is really my bread and butter of everyday life. I made so many new friends plus found out some of my old pals and it’s truly amazing. However, I didn’t have any idea of the possible security threats while using Facebook. I generally use a public Wi-Fi nearby. Fortunately, I got here in time. Thanks to Felicity, I’m using ExpressVPN for their damn powerful encryption and blazingly fast performance. Keep it up!

NordVPN has been very consistent. Last night was the first night I’d ever seen them drop a server and once I reconnected, I was back live in less than a minute.

Just a small correction, I am from Egypt and Facebook is not restricted whatsoever. It was only banned during the 2011 revolution for only a day, but then again the whole internet was down that day in Egypt. Now there are hardly any internet restrictions in Egypt. This does not mean that there isn’t extreme online surveillance, especially after the recent terrorist attacks.

You can’t absolutely access Facebook with ExpressVPN !
I tried selecting several countries. Facebook block every IP from ExpressVPN.
Facebook even permanently disable every account trying connect with ExpressVPN!
Sorry, but you can’use ExpressVPN to use Facebook. If you try, Facebook disable your account and there’s nothing you can do to recover it. You can’t even register new account. I tried a lot of times. Nothing.
Every country or IP of ExpressVPN you get disabled your account.
